Training:
All staff have annual staff training.
All staff have regular safeguarding training led by the DSL in staff morning briefings.
All members of the Safeguarding Team undergo DSL training run by CHSCP.
Members of the Safeguarding Team often attend Safeguarding training run by the CHSCP.
CHSCP Serious Case Reviews:
When the CHSCP release a serious case review, we read this through and consider what actions we need to do in order to ensure that we have best practice.
Trusted Adults:
Each student at the start of the academic year names two members of staff in school who they feel they can trust. Students can then go to these staff members if they have anything they want to talk about.
If we have safeguarding concerns about students, we may ask their trusted adults to speak with them to check in with how they are.
Students have the opportunity to change their trusted adult throughout the year if they feel their trusted adult has changed.
Making the Safeguarding Team Known:
Our aim is for all students in the school to be aware of who the safeguarding team are.
There is a slide every tutor time with the pictures and names of all of the safeguarding team to give them a weekly reminder of who the safeguarding team are. A reminder is also given to students about how they can raise concerns.
There are posters in every classroom with pictures and names of all the safeguarding team.
There is a safeguarding display on the ground floor outside the main hall which has the pictures and names of all the safeguarding team.
Safeguarding Emails
We have created two email accounts to help students feel more confident in coming forward with safeguarding concerns. These email addresses are:
Theme of the Week:
Each week a different theme is explore both in tutor times and lunchtime reflections.
Some of the themes we have looked at this year are:
Conduct in the community
Positive bystanders
Positive relationships
Anti-bullying
Consent
Identity
Child on Child Abuse
Children's Mental Health Week
Physical and Mental Health
Fundamental British Values
Making the Most out of the Summer Holidays
PSHE:
Students learn how to maximise their physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing through a programme of personal, health, social and emotional awareness (PHSE).
RSE:
In October 2021, we did a student questionnaire to help us get a sense of the prevalence of the issue of sexual harassment and assault in school, and to find out more about their view of RSE lessons.
Improvements were made to our RSE lessons which included:
ensuring students know what coercive behaviour looks like.
discussing with students how to report concerns and supporting them to know what that looks like.
Including more scenarios so students can apply their knowledge of sexual harassment and consent using older students to support with younger students understanding of RSE.
include more gendered assemblies
For some of the year groups, we invited Young Hackney in to give RSE workshops. This will be something which we will do again as students found this engaging and helpful.
Daily Reflections:
After students have eaten their lunch, a member of staff will give a reflection on a different topic each day. On one of these days it will relate to the theme of the week, but the other days will have a different focus on topics which will help students to broaden their understanding.
Future Plans:
To invite Young Hackney in to run more workshops on key topics.
Sharp:
Students can make a disclosure you can also use the SHARP System: https://cola.thesharpsystem.com/ - Click this link to download the app. This is a confidential way to report concerns.
