Distribution-It is reported in evergreen, monsoon to mixed deciduous primary or sometimes secondary rain forests, up to 850 m of altitude. Fernandoa prefers limestone or siliceous soils to grow. It is found in India, Myanmar, Indo-China, the Andaman and Cocos Islands, Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
Leaves
Large, opposite, imparipinnate, leaflets -2 pairs and an odd one, elliptical, a pair of small leaflets often found at the base of the petiole.3
Bark
It reaches up to 40 m tall, 70 cm in diameter. Buttress roots are absent. It is dark brown and rough.
Inflorescence: Large terminal panicles.
Flowers
Calyx is bell-shaped, 3-5 lobed. Corolla is hairy, brownish-yellow, tubular below, swollen above, 5 lobed, superior Ovary, many ovules, long style, stigma is bilobed.
Fruit
Capsule is cylindrical, twisted and contorted, seeds are winged.
FACTS & MEDICINAL USES
Fernandoa adenophylla, commonly known as Dhopa-phali, Ziron, Mostanphul, Lotum-poh and Karen wood of family Bignoniaceae, has been used traditionally for snakebite (Morigaon district of Assam, India),
Hemorrhoids and constipation (Chakma tribe, Bangladesh) and skin disorder (Thai traditional medicine).
The Crude extract of Fernandoa adenophylla has already been tested for pharmacological properties like antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-TB, and antihypertensive and leishmanicidal activities.It is very useful in treating these diseases.
Since not much research has been carried out on Fernandoa adenophylla, it paves way for researchers to explore its potential in the field of medicinal plants.
