Bring required documents to prove identity and age (e.g., birth certificate, Social Security card, school ID with transcript).
Pass the written permit test on traffic signs, rules, and safe driving.
Pass a vision test.
Pay the fee (varies by age and county).
Result: You receive a Class D Learner Permit.
Complete a Pre-Licensing Course (5-hour class) or a full Driver Education Course through school or DMV-approved programs.
Get the MV-285 (Driver Ed Certificate) or MV-278 (5-hour course certificate).
Practice driving with a licensed adult (at least 21).
You must log at least 50 hours, including 15 hours at night and 10 hours in moderate to heavy traffic.
Hold your permit for at least 6 months.
Schedule your road test on the NYS DMV website.
Bring to the road test:
Your permit
MV-285 or MV-278 certificate
MV-262 form (Certification of Supervised Driving)
Pass the road test.
Result: You receive a Junior Driver License (with some restrictions).
At age 18 (or after holding your junior license for 6 months without any serious traffic convictions), your license automatically upgrades to a Class D full license.
Or request the upgrade through the DMV if eligible sooner.
