Chromebook Maintenance

Chromebooks are designed to require minimal maintenance by Google and their partners.

Students should regularly...

  • On a daily basis power down the chromebook completely. Shutting down the chromebook causes it to install any pending updates to Chrome OS and the browser upon restarting. You can see when an update is pending as their will be an up arrow/notification in the notification area.

  • Periodically wipe down the chromebook with a damp (not wet) microfiber cloth or a screen wipe with no more than 40% alcohol. This will keep the touch screen effective and debris from accumulating on the keyboard. Never spray fluids directly onto your chromebook.

  • Use care when plugging and unplugging cords (power, usb, headphones, etc.) on your Chromebook. Pull cables straight out to avoid damaging the ports.

  • Always remove cables when the device is not in use. A common cause of damage is snagged cords when they are being moved.

Before reaching out for support

Students should...

  1. Clear the chrome cache. Select the three dots in upper right > More Tools > Clear Browsing Data > Check Cookies, Cache and uncheck the rest>click Clear Data. Restart CB

  2. Temporarily turn off all extensions. Select the three dots in upper right >More Tools >Extensions. Remove any extensions you don't recognize or at a minimum disabled them by sliding the slider to the left. Restart and check to see if the problem persists. If the problem is solved an extension is causing a conflict. Turn them on one at a time until the problem reoccurs then you know which extension to remove. Note some extensions are installed by SHEN and cannot be removed or disabled.

  3. When having trouble reaching a non-blocked website or pages are loading slowly try removing your user profile. Sign out of the computer. While at the user login page click the arrow pointing down to the right of your name and click remove and remove again. You will be prompted to log back in. (Removing your profile may result in a loss of bookmark and files that were saved to the local drive)

  4. If none of the above troubleshooting works then....Power Wash or reset to factory settings - From the sign-on screen> Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R > Select Powerwash >Continue. It will automatically reconnect to the school wi-fi and you will be asked to sign in again.
