Welcome to ELA

Literacy Specialists teach in multiple buildings K-5. During our 30 minute weekly classes, we supplement ELA instructional strategies and skills for all students.

This instructional time with students is in addition to ELA instruction taught by classroom teachers.

In the Shenendehowa Central School District, ELA is a Special Area class, similar to Art, P.E. & Music.

The Literacy Specialist/ELA program was established in 2005 to reinforce specific ELA skills and strategies for students K-5. The skills in need are identified by New York State and local assessments and are reviewed annually. The Literacy Specialists supplement these skills taught by the classroom teachers in order to enhance the District and State English Language Arts programs. The components of this program include reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language. Our lessons reflect our dedication to supporting the Common Core Curriculum, New York State standards, and 21st Century Skills. The Shenendehowa Literacy Specialists' goals are to create a cohesive ELA program across the district that facilitates student achievement and growth.
