Performance Assessment

Check out some real performance assessments from

Mrs. Seely's class.

The Sloth Project

During a PBL unit about animal senses one student had the opportunity to share her love of sloths. This student applied what she learned during science lessons while integrating texts all about sloths to determine how they sense and respond to the world around them. This student wrote an informational text showing what she has learned about sloths.

This student also wanted to share her passion with her class. She designed a lesson for her class where they would have the opportunity read her informational text and respond to a question set based on details from the text. Student designed, student delivered.

Student Created Informational Piece

This student worked hard to integrate multiple texts about sloths and how they use their body to sense and respond to the world around them.

This student prepared a learning experience for her peers. The class was able to listen to her presentation about sloths then go into her informational piece and answer questions based on what they read in the text.

Using a Diagram to teach

This student explains how a diagram can be used to better understand the body parts of a sloth. You can hear that this student understands the purpose of a diagram and knows how to use one intentionally.

How to mulitply numbers according to Anna

New year Multiplication

One student felt very confident in her ability to multiply. She wanted to share her methods for multiplication with her class to ring in the new year! She had a desire for all of the students in the class to practice multiplying but then have the chance to complete a multiplication problem where all the answers computed to 2024! This was a challenge. This student learned that she needed to use long division to help her reach her goal for this learning experience.

Long Division

This student learned the steps to long division to help her create a desired multiplication problem. She had to process through many numbers to discover which numbers would work without a remainder.

First she modeled how to solve a multiplication problem.

Then students solved practice problems to get a word to unscramble.

As they unscrambled the word they received celebration items like a hat and a horn blower.

Finally when students unscrambled the message "Happy New Year" They received their final problem. Each table group had a different problem but all problems computed to 2024.

Reflection of Titanic project

The Titanic Project

Two students worked for weeks integrating texts about the Titanic and its sinking. They worked to use their understanding of text features and determining the central idea of a variety of texts in order to help them write an informational piece. It was amazing to see their passion grow as they build their understanding with more and more resources. One student dove deep into the engineering of the ship while the other was highly interested in the class structures of the ship.

You can see the joy on this students face as her peers dive into her passion for the Titanic.

This student is discussing information that she found in the text after she started annotating.

Area of a school bus

Surface Area Bus Project

During the first week of school two of my students found a box and decided that they saw a bus! So they began cutting the box and reshaping it into a bus. Once they completed their model they then asked the question how much paint would it take to paint the bus yellow. Then their surface area journey began. Check out their adventures with building a bus in their slides. They encountered many problems and over their challenge.

The students are measuring their model to determine the length of each edge. Then they found the surface area of each side.

A bus drive was kind enough to check out their model and see how they developed the surface area.

The students were able to ask questions about real busses and demonstrate their understanding of surface area.

Now its time for a real bus

Civil Participant Interview and Exhibitions

Civil Participation

Students worked to communicate with a community member about a change they want to see in their community. Student choice drove a variety of projects that created a plan to make a positive change. From calling for a boycott on products that use animal testing to writing an international company about how they can improve education in impoverished communities by using the Profile of Graduate ,these civil engineers took their work seriously.

Ultimate string

The Ultimate String Project

In art class my students learned how to crochet. The class wanted to work towards crocheting the longest string that they could, so we made it into a measurement activity. We first used non standards units of measurement. Then we converted the units into inches and feet. Next we set the goal to have the string stretch all the way across the school....But wait!!

They were not done! Check out how far they went!

Now we have a new goal to see if our string will wrap around the school.

Division Scramble

Division Scramble

Students created a division scramble to help their peers practice the steps to long division. These creators of the assignment had to build a desired division problem so that the class can work towards a desired remainder. Once the students got the desired remainder they could then use the remainders to access the code to unscramble the letters.

Can you guess what they unscrambled?

Symmetry Assignment reflection

Symmetry Assignment

Students worked together to create a learning moment for the rest of their class. They felt confident with their ability to identify angles and lines of symmetry and wanted to put their mastery to the test. This project allowed these students to backwards plan with a purpose for angle and lines of symmetry. These students were able to get a deeper understanding of how to find lines of symmetry in unusual shapes.
