In SCPS, we are rethinking the role of assessment for learning, agency, and equity in a Competency Based Learning system.

Educational equity means that each child receives what he or she needs to develop to his or her full academic and social potential. Working towards equity involves:

Ensuring equally high outcomes for all participants in our educational system; removing the predictability of success or failures that currently correlates with any social or cultural factor

Interrupting inequitable practices, examining biases, and creating inclusive multicultural school environments for adults and children

Discovering and cultivating the unique gifts, talents, and interests that every human possesses.

Dr. Neihof, former Superintendent of Shelby County Public Schools, often spoke of Standards Based Grading (SBG) and the changes that have occurred in education and society. He shared this reflection:

“ESSA -- the Every Student Succeeds Act -- mandates that America’s schools are to eliminate achievement gaps and that all students must reach proficiency. This means school districts must ensure a learning system designed to teach for mastery, rather than sort students as winners and losers. Student’s grades now need to reflect exactly what each student has mastered and where they need more work.”
