We do our best to provide students with the opportunity to succeed, but ultimately it is up to them to make good choices. These are some of the policies that I have in place to help them show just how responsible and amazing they are.
Low Scores:
If a student scores below 80% on a homework assignment they can correct their mistakes and turn it in again to be regraded. Wordly Wise workbooks cannot be redone or corrected as students have already heard the answers. Any workbook assignments that take place while a student is absent will not count against them. The maximum score on a re-do is 80%.
Low Vocabulary Test Score:
Students will normally be offered opportunities to retake the vocabulary test during their lunch break and may retake tests as often as necessary until the cut-off date at the end of the semester. Maximum score on a retake is 80%. Students get the highest of the two test scores, either the original score or the retake. Students who score below 60% will be required to retake the test during lunch break until they pass it.
Quizzes and Chapter Summaries
Students will be assigned materials to read as homework. Quizzes and chapter summaries are normally given to ensure students have done the assigned reading. As such, they cannot be made up or corrected.
Late work:
Work is due at the beginning of the class period. Any work turned in after that is deemed late and will incur a penalty for being late. Late work will be marked as Missing in the Infinite Campus grade book and will have a score of 0 points until it is turned in and graded. Students may turn in late work at any time until the cut-off date for credit, but the maximum score that late work can receive is 80%. On-time work is graded before late work.
Please note: This policy is intended to encourage responsibility and organizational skills in students, but also allow students to recover from a mistake. I want them to learn.
Detention:
Students with missing assignments will have detention after school to take care of the problem. If they serve the detention when it is assigned, they can leave when the work is completed. Students who fail to show up for their detention will have detention the next day and must remain for the entire 45 minutes.
Online Work Submission:
Most student work will be submitted electronically. There will be a few exceptions that will require students to submit work only manually, but these are fairly rare.
If Late Work or Absent Work is submitted online, students are required to notify the teacher either verbally or by email so that the teacher will know that it is available to be graded. I will not go searching for it.
Extra Credit:
Very few extra credit opportunities will be offered, so take advantage of them when they arise. Please do not ask for extra credit to bring a grade up for eligibility and such. Students need to be responsible and keep their grades up throughout the school year. When extra credit opportunities are available it is smart for students to take advantage of them even if they have acceptable grades at the time; it gives them a buffer in case of a low scoring assignment.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will be handled in accordance with the student handbook. This includes use of an electronic AI to create the work, which is considered plagiarism by the teacher as the student did not create the work themselves. Work submitted by a student must be the product of that student. Any plagiarized work will be marked as "cheated" in the grade book until the student submits their own work for grading.
