The UK government has introduced eVisas, a digital status which you can use to show your permission in the UK. Please visit the eVisas webpage for further information on how to apply and evidence your eVisa.

After your visa is granted, check the length and conditions of your visa carefully. If you experience any problems with your visa, follow the guidance and contact the International Student Support team if you cannot find the information you need.
The University offers a variety of accommodation and you may find 'Smart Move Sheffield' particularly useful for finding accommodations. The University runs a Residence Life team (including their own student mentor) who can give wellbeing support and run resident-only events to facilitate community building.
Comprehensive housing advice and support is available from the Student Advice Centre at Sheffield Students' Union. This service can help you if you live in private or University owned student accommodation. They have useful househunting advice and can help you with any problems you may have with your accommodation or landlord.

Don't be a Victim! Always use the official University Payment Pages to pay for your Fees and Accommodation. Every payment you ever make to the University will be from a link on the payment page. If you always start at this page you can be sure your payment will be accepted and is secure.
Scams are the fastest growing form of crime, so you need to know how to protect yourself against them.
If you make friends with someone on Social Media, such as WeChat, who offers a too good to be true deal for paying your fees with them, this is likely to be fraud and you could lose any money you give to them.
If you do fall victim to fraud and it is affecting you or your studies or wellbeing, you can contact welfare adviser at safeguardingandwelfare@sheffield.ac.uk.
One of the first things you might want to do after arriving at Sheffield is to open a UK bank account. You might also find the money-saving tips and the money tools useful for managing your finances.

Part-time work
If you are studying in the UK on a Visitor or Short-Term Student Visa, you are not permitted to work at any time, including unpaid/voluntary work.
If you are on a Student or Tier 4 Student Visa, your eligibility to work will be outlined in your visa decision letter/email.
If you are studying at the degree level, you can work up to 20 hours per week during term time, however the University recommends you not to work more than 16 hours.
There are also restrictions on working hours for vacation periods, ensuring you check the guidance before taking any work.
The Careers & Employability Service runs the Employability & Placements Hub (accessible once you formally registered with the University) based in the Students’ Union, where you’ll find a dedicated team of recruitment specialists with knowledge of the local area who can help you get started on finding part-time work in Sheffield both on and off-campus, including jobs at Sheffield Students' Union. You can access the service via call or visit in person.
You can also access the Employability & Placements Hubs at The Cornerstone in the Wave, Jessop West, and at the Engineering Heartspace. All hubs are staffed by Student Ambassadors who can provide initial support with employability and placement-related queries.
Once registered at the university you will also have access to the Career Connect platform via MUSE (My University of Sheffield Environment) where you can search for local, national and international jobs as well as search employability workshops delivered by Careers staff and employers. You can also access our resource pathways and book 1-1 appointments with our advisers.
If you are offered a job you will be required to provide a share code to prove your right to work in the UK before you start work. If you do not have a digital immigration status (such as pre-settled or settled status under the EU settlement scheme), employers will only be able to accept physical documents approved by the UKVI. Please refer to the Proving your right to work page for details.
You will need a National Insurance Number in order to work in the UK. You can find out how to obtain one here, or call Jobcentre Plus on 0800 141 2079 to start the process. Please do NOT pay any agency to obtain a National Insurance Number which is issued free of charge.
