when and where to apply for translational funding
Check out the EPSRC Toolkit as it provides some basic information of Technology Readiness Levels and which funding remit your project may be suitable for.
Popular translational funding schemes
- Aims to accelerate the transition from discovery science to the early stages of therapeutic/biomarker development
- Applied for by Institutions such as TUoS, which then provides locally-administered, responsive and flexible funding to support preliminary translational work
- Funds animal research
- Funding for up to 12 months, up to ~£85k
- Application deadline: 8th May 2018
- Funds the pre-clinical development and early clinical testing of novel therapeutics, devices and diagnostics, including “repurposing” of existing therapies
- When an industrial partner joins as a co-applicant, an MRC Industrial Collaboration Agreement (MICA) needs to be completed. The industrial partner is expected to contribute 25-50% of in kind contributions
- Funds animal research
- Funding for up to 36 months, up to £2-3M (if justifiable and value for money)
- Two-stage application process
- DPFS is an ongoing scheme, with outline deadlines every 4 months (March, July & November)
- i4i advances healthcare technologies, devices and interventions for increased patient benefit in areas of existing or emerging clinical need
- A minimum of two organisations must be involved from either NHS Trust, HEI or SME; funding can be requested for all
- The lead applicant must be based in England
- Does not fund animal research
- Funding for up to 36 months, no upper funding limit
- Two-stage application process
- i4i is an ongoing scheme, with outline deadlines every 6 months (June & December)
- Challenge Awards are commissioned on an ad hoc basis in areas of existing or emerging healthcare need. The expected output is a disruptive technology with the potential to offer improved outcomes for NHS patients
- Either the lead applicant and/or a co-applicant must be from an NHS Trust or NHS service provider
- Projects must include first-in-man or later stage trials
- Does not fund animal research
- Funding for up to 60 months, no upper funding limit
- Two-stage application process
- Winner takes all!
- WT Innovator Awards focus on a range of drug, devices, diagnostics and interventions.
- Funds animal research
- Doesn't usually consider proposals for phase III or IV clinical trials for therapeutics or vaccines.
- Funding for up to 24 months, up to £750k
- Two-stage application process if outside focus areas

- Two-stage application process
- Ongoing scheme, with outline deadlines every 6 months (April & October)
- Open Call
- Single stage, with the panel meeting every 3 months.
- Better suited to projects at the early technology readiness level with the emphasis being on the engineering component.
- Technology needs to fit certain requirements in that it is aligned with both or one of the the:
