Courtney Wood
Dr Vicky Grant Creative Library Project Lead
v.grant@sheffield.ac.uk - @missvagrant
Hi, I'm Vic, and I'm Head of Library Learning and Teaching at the University of Sheffield, Chair of the IATUL Special Interest Group for Information Literacy and AHRC-RLUK Research Fellow, leading the Creative Library Project. My interest in library creativity and the liberating information literacy movement stems from my PhD research which blended auto-ethnography and participatory action research methodology to develop a living library. I worked with poetry, stitch-craft, life and creative writing, art, collage and connected conversations to position students with chronic illness as connected knowledge creators. My passion is in libraries as sites of transformative learning.
Tomás Rocha Lawrence SU Liberation & Inclusions Officer & Creative Library Project Co-lead liberation.officer@sheffield.ac.uk
Hiya! I’m Tomás, your Liberation and Inclusions officer at the Students' Union! With a STEM degree in Biochemistry and Microbiology, I spent most of my time in Sheffield thinking of the library as solely a place for study rather than for creativity, and I know many students share that sentiment. Now as part of the creative library project, we have an exciting opportunity to change that thinking, broadening our horizons with underrepresented perspectives, and transforming our university library into a hub for inclusive participation!
Courtney Wood Lead Library Student Associate and Creative Library Project Officer cwood8@sheffield.ac.uk
Hi, my name is Courtney Wood and I’ll be your Lead Library Student Associate! I’m a fourth year Urban Studies and Planning student with a passion for seeing more representation of minority groups within Higher Education spaces. My job will be to create workshops centering key Liberation days and months using creative tools from sewing machines to VR equipment. As a lover of books, I’ve always enjoyed being within library spaces and having the opportunity to access writings that would have been beyond my financial means. Through this role, my hope is to make our library space a more inclusive space that celebrates students as knowledge creators and facilitators. I can’t wait to make more connections within our student community and produce amazing sessions that uplift underrepresented voices in different sectors of work and the world of academia!
Rhian Whitehead-Wright Creative Library Project Officer
r.whitehead-wright@sheffield.ac.uk
Hello! I’m Rhian and I work in Vic’s team in the Library, as Digital Skills Librarian. My main role is to manage and coordinate the creation and maintenance of the Library’s digital learning resources including videos and tutorials, to support learning and teaching at the University. I have always been interested in how students use both online and physical library spaces; my masters dissertation investigated specifically how PGT students use the Information Commons. I’m therefore very excited to see how this project may develop the use of the space and encourage more creative approaches to learning and teaching from both facilitators and students.
Project Associates - Students' Union Liberation Officers
Laura Edwards
Laura Edwards SU Disabled Students’ Officer disabledstudents.officer@sheffield.ac.uk
Hello, I’m Laura! I am the Disabled Students’ Officer for this year at the Students Union. Alongside my officer role, I am currently a Level 2 BSc Zoology student. I have always enjoyed being creative, and I see it as a great way to express myself. I love to crochet in my spare time and creating things for others brings me a lot of joy. I am a strong believer that doing creative activities can have a positive impact on people. I am very excited for the Creative Library Project, where students can come together to create amazing art, celebrate inclusivity and liven up our libraries.
Zoe Lancaster SU Women Students Officer womens.officer@sheffield.ac.uk
Hi! My name is Zoe and I am your Women Students’ Part-Time Officer at the Students Union, as well as a third year East Asian Studies undergraduate student. The value of library spaces to me extends beyond access to course materials. For example, the library has provided me with the opportunity to discover literature that I am interested in, such as feminist literature, which would otherwise be out of reach due to the high cost of many of these works. As a result, the library serves as an inclusive area in which ideas can be explored, and the inclusivity of our libraries can be used as a platform for students to express themselves. As a result, I love the option to use the library as a creative place as it adds to the overall theme of inclusive learning and expression. I'm looking forward to seeing how students use the Creative Library Project to express themselves this academic year!
Jephthah Ekogiawe
Jephthah Ekogiawe SU LGBT+ Students Officer lgbtplus.officer@sheffield.ac.uk
Hi there! I’m Jephthah and I am your LGBT+ Officer at the Sheffield University Students' Union for the 2023/2024 academic year. As a third-year biomedical science student, the library has played a huge part in the success of my course. I recognise the library has historically been seen as a space to drive forward academic excellence, however, the library can be more; a place for discovery and creativity. I deeply feel if we are to decolonise HE, we need to prioritise decolonising learning spaces like our libraries. The creative library project would be a way to let people know that their learning space is what they wish to make it.
Project Associates - Library Student Associates
Chimere Achinanya
Chimere Achinanya Library Student Associate
coachinanya1@sheffield.ac.uk
Hello! I'm Chimere, a second-year bioengineering student with a deep passion for fostering diversity and inclusivity within our university community. I'm absolutely thrilled to be part of this team, as it aligns perfectly with my strong commitment to promoting minority representation. My journey involves being actively involved in various societies where I've had the privilege to turn my passion into action.
As the Bioengineering Social Secretary, Nigerian Society Publicity Officer, and International Engineering Ambassador, I've consistently strived to transform my ideas into impactful initiatives that celebrate diversity and inclusivity in university spaces. I'm genuinely excited about the opportunity to bring my experience and enthusiasm to this project, and I can't wait to collaborate and make a meaningful impact together!
Léna-Soraya Bodiong
Léna-Soraya Bodiong Library Student Associate
lsbodiong1@sheffield.ac.uk
Hiya, I’m Léna! I am a second-year architecture student. I’m excited to be a part of the Creative Library Project! I use she/her pronouns and I value how intersectionality and leadership go hand in hand when it comes to diversity and inclusion initiatives. I can’t wait to metamorphose the way diversity and inclusion programs often segment groups based on just one element of identity to promote diversity and want to address the intersections of experiences of people who belong to multiple groups. I love sculpting and painting and I am looking forward to creating workshops and collaborating with everyone to make the library a safer space.
Nabila Cruz
Nabila Cruz Library Student Associate (Research Student)
ncruzdecarvalho1@sheffield.ac.uk
Hello! I’m Nabila, PhD student in Sociological Studies. My research looks into the consequences to the trust relationship between the BBC and young adults in the context of the increasing use of artificial intelligence in digital news media, such as using AI generated text, images, audio, etc. I’m in my second year and hopefully will be starting my fieldwork soon, involving interviews with young people which will help me set up generative AI creative workshops. I’m really looking forward to taking part in this project not only because my professional career started in libraries but also because it involves creativity and data literacy. Working as a library assistant ignited my interest in how people relate to information and technology and led me to continue my studies and start a research career.
Niamh Harvey-Kelly
Niamh Harvey-Kelly Library Student Associate
nharvey-kelly1@sheffield.ac.uk
Hi! I’m Niamh, I’m a third year philosophy, religion and ethics student. I’m really excited to be part of the Creative Library Project team. The project connects all the things I really care about; inclusion, diversity and creativity, all within the library. I’ve always loved libraries, they’re such an important community space and I’m excited to see them being used to promote intersectional inclusivity at the University. I really enjoy planning events and creative activities; keeping them accessible to everyone is always at the heart of it. I love that this project brings creative joy into liberation and I’m excited to be part of the work being done to make libraries a welcoming place for everyone!
Becca Gutierrez
Becca Gutierrez Library Student Associate
rgutierrez1@sheffield.ac.uk
Hello! I’m Becca, an MA student in the Librarianship programme. I’m very excited to be part of this project. I’m passionate about librarianship and making libraries more inclusive and welcoming institutions. I believe that everyone should be able to see themselves in their libraries and the literature within. My undergraduate work involved exploring LGBTQ+ stories in young adult fiction, and I’m thrilled to continue promoting inclusion in this way.
Project Associates - Library Staff Associates
Catarina Gomes (she/her) Development Placement Creative Library Project
catarina.gomes@sheffield.ac.uk
Olá :) I work for the library as a Learning Spaces Assistant and I am helping this project with some admin support. I am not very creative but that is something that I would like to develop with this project and hopefully go off on my own to create the next Mona Lisa (I wish). I want to develop my professional skills with the project and grow more knowledgeable of how we can create an inclusive space for students and staff in the University of Sheffield Library.
Caterina Sciamanna Information Literacy Librarian
c.sciamanna@sheffield.ac.uk
Hi, I’m Caterina Sciamanna and work in the University Library’s Learning and Teaching Services as the Information Literacy Librarian. I lead the Learning Development Section and I’m responsible for the Library synchronous offer (workshops) and for the development of the content for the asynchronous offer (online resources) of the Research Skills and Critical Thinking hub.
I’m delighted to be involved with the Creative Library project in partnership with university students and colleagues. The project brings together creativity, diversity, and information and digital literacy in powerful and, hopefully, transformative ways.
Claire Brady (top) with former Students' Union Liberation Officer Grace Cleary
Claire Brady Library Community Volunteer
clairebrady@blueyonder.co.uk
Hello, my name is Claire. Initially my career began when I worked in Cancer Research in Heidelberg and Toronto. Following my return to the UK I became a primary school teacher and subsequently a headteacher. Since my retirement I have been a volunteer, working initially at Crisis and now at the library as part of the Creative Library Project. Throughout my teaching career I have been involved in the development of thinking skills with creativity being chief amongst them. My spare time has always been occupied with creative pastimes; art, sewing, knitting, crafting etc. I hope as a volunteer to bring my skills to help others to develop their own creative journeys.
Rosa Sadler
Rosa Sadler Digital Fluency Librarian r.sadler@sheffield.ac.uk
Hi, I’m Rosa Sadler and I work in the Library’s Learning and Teaching Services team as the Digital Fluency Librarian. I manage the Library Digital Learning section who create and maintain the digital learning resources we provide for students to develop their research skills, critical thinking and digital fluency. I work with the wider University digital learning community to ensure these resources are accessible and embedded within the virtual learning environment. I’m motivated in my librarianship by a belief in the importance of libraries in furthering social justice and I see libraries as spaces of activism. With this in mind, I’m excited to be part of the Creative Library Project, collaborating with students and staff to explore and open up new possibilities for socially conscious creativity within the Library.
Jenni Adams
Dr Jenni Adams Library Scholarly Communications Team representative j.adams@sheffield.ac.uk
Hi! I’m Jenni and I work in the University Library’s Scholarly Communications team as Open Research Manager. It’s my job to make sure University staff and students get the support they need to share the outputs of their research in accessible and inclusive ways. I’m really excited to be involved in this project - I fully support its aims in changing the way we conceive of libraries (and perhaps knowledge itself) as something that belongs to everyone, and which we all (should) have the power to reshape in critical and liberatory ways.
Ro Daniels
Ro Daniels Library & Information Advisory Team Representative r.daniels@sheffield.ac.uk
Hi, I’m Ro Daniels and my pronouns are they/them. I work in the University Library Information and Advisory Team, mostly based at Western Bank Library. I’m a writer and artist, with a master’s degree in Creative Writing, and I’m joining this project primarily to help facilitate workshops. I’m really excited to help broaden the way we interact with academic knowledge, and hopefully help users move beyond a transactional relationship with the library to something more transformative.
Georgie Broad
Georgie Broad Library & Information Advisory Team Representative g.broad@sheffield.ac.uk
Hi, I’m Georgie! I work in the Virtual Advisory Help Service at the library, and I am excited to be part of the Creative Library Project. I am looking forward to helping with facilitating workshops and helping communicate the project to staff and students alike. I am a member of the CILIP Information Literacy Group, and I also co-run inclusive creative writing workshops in my spare time, as well as writing poetry and games. I am looking forward to collaborating with the team to create a safe, inclusive, and creative space in the library!

Richard Steadman-Jones
Dr Richard Steadman-Jones Academic Partner Faculty of Arts and Humanities. r.d.steadman-jones@sheffield.ac.uk
Hi, I’m Richard - I’m a senior lecturer in the School of English, where I teach in two main areas: linguistic approaches to narrative texts and creative approaches to digital story-telling. I’m also the Director of Education in English and am currently focusing on the place of digital skills in the English curriculum and on helping students to articulate how their course has changed and developed them (in collaboration with our fabulous employability lead, Amber Regis). I’m passionate about the arts and try to see as much theatre, film, music, dance, comedy, and visual art as I can. And as a fifty-something gay man with an academic focus on narrative, I take a professional and personal interest in LGBT+ histories and stories.
Pete Mylon
Dr Pete Mylon Academic Partner Faculty of Engineering. pete.mylon@sheffield.ac.uk
Hi, I’m Pete. I’m a Senior University Teacher in Engineering and Academic Lead for the iForge and Co-Curricular Activities. In 2017, I worked with students to set up the iForge, a student-led makerspace that supports creativity across all disciplines, and I am always keen to see students making things, both physical and digital, whether for academic work, personal projects such as birthday gifts or fancy dress costumes, or just to develop their skills and express themselves.
