Brant is Professor of Chemical and Materials Engineering in the School of Chemical, Materials, and Biological Engineering at The University of Sheffield, UK, where he leads the Sustainable Materials at Sheffield (SMASH) research team. His research focuses on development of sustainable materials and processes for infrastructure, environmental remediation and clean energy, with a core focus on cement, concrete, and related materials, for applications in construction and nuclear sectors.
He has been awarded externally funded grants worth >£20M from EPSRC, DESNZ, BEIS, Innovate UK, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Sellafield Ltd., UK National Nuclear Laboratory, and UK and international industry. He is UoS Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training SATURN
(Skills and Training Underpinning Renaissance in Nuclear), UK the Sheffield academic lead for Innovandi (the Global Cement and Concrete Industry Research Network), and leads a £1M partnership with Sellafield Ltd. focused on development of novel cement encapsulants. He is Director of Postgraduate Research in the School of Chemical, Materials, and Biological Engineering.
Brant was appointed Lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering in Sept 2019, and promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2023. Prior to this he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Sheffield (Oct 2016 – Aug 2019), after completing his PhD in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at The University of Melbourne, Australia (awarded Dec 2016). He also holds Bachelor degrees from The University of Melbourne in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (Honours) and Science (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology).
