Invitation
Your school is being invited to take part in a research project carried out by the University of Sheffield. The project aims to explore parental experiences in supporting the early literacy development of children in Reception and Year 1 and the home-school connection.
It is increasingly recognised that schools have an important role to play in supporting parents’ engagement with their children’s learning. This project aims to evaluate the early literacy information and support provided to parents/carers from school settings, the level of parental engagement as well as their experience with supporting their child’s literacy learning. (please use the different sections on top right to view more details and the project’s information sheets for parent/carers as well as teachers)
Parents/carers of Reception and Year 1 children and their teachers are invited to participate in this project.
What would the school need to do?
We are asking schools to send out an invitation to participate with an online questionnaire link to all parents/carers of Reception and Year 1 children. All of our procedures are GDPR compliant and consent will be sought prior to any data collection.
What would teachers need to do?
Teachers will be asked to fill in an online questionnaire about their role in supporting parents/carers with home based early literacy instruction and the home-school connection. The questionnaire will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
What would parents need to do?
Parents/carers will be asked to fill in an online questionnaire about their experiences with supporting their child’s home literacy development and the home-school connection. This questionnaire will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Short interviews will follow with parents who have given their consent at the end of the questionnaire to gain more insight in the parents/carers experiences with supporting their child’s home literacy development and the home-school connection.
A summary report of the study findings will be sent to every participating school. In addition, we hope to be able to use the current findings to co-produce recommendations and resources for schools together with parents/carers and teachers that would support schools in improving home learning and parental engagement with literacy centred activities. Finally, teachers and families who complete the questionnaire will be entered into a draw to win vouchers.
We hope you will consider taking part in this research project, if you decide to take part, please complete the school consent form : School Consent Form at your earliest convenience. This will sign you up for the study - you are however still free to withdraw at any time without giving any reason. Once we receive the consent we will get in touch with you or your dedicated project contact about the next steps (i.e. forwarding project information to parents/carers and teachers).
