Supporting victims/ survivors of gender-based violence who need an interpreter: A User friendly toolkit for Practitioners and Interpreters

Following discussion with range of interpreters, practitioner and people from ethnic background, we felt the need of developing a user friendly toolkit that help practitioners and interpreters to work collaboratively to effectively support victims/survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) who cannot speak English or who have a communication difficulty.

This toolkit discusses the terminology and language used to understand domestic violence, its various types, and barriers in reporting. It further discusses the E.A.R.L.I.E.R framework to enable disclosure. The Toolkit guides practitioners about ways of working with interpreters, including language use, culture, and scheduling and managing interpreter session. The toolkit also shares ‘Good practice principles’ for interpreter to run an effective session. Finally, toolkit signpost and enlists sources of support that victims of  domestic violence, practitioners and interpreters can avail.
