Congratulations Hollie!!!


Hollie Shaw passed her PhD with minor corrections and we are very proud and happy for her! Thanks to co supervisor Prof Graham Stafford, and examiners Dr Tim Nicholl and Prof Craig Murdoch. Celebrations ocurred with a massive pork pie in lieu of a cake as requested :)

We welcome back Dr Isabel Parreira, who is working in our group with Dr Candice Majewski  for a short time investigating antimicrobial properties of some new polymers & additives we are interested in. Here she is celebrating her PhD viva with Hollie in October 23 :)

The Dental School had a large presence at BiTEG 2023, and several winners including Ohud for best flash talk and Cerys for best talk. Well done everyone, and BiTEG was brilliant as ever to round off the year.

Joey gave a talk as a new member of Insigneo at the Winter Symposium. Great to see everyone and hear what diverse research is going on under the Insigneo umbrella

27 November-1 December 2023

Dr Kai Zheng , Prof Yan Xu and colleagues made the return visit to us in Sheffield. Short but sweet, we enjoyed showing them around our facilities, the new DTU, and the wider University. Plus the ineviatble introductions to fish and chips and Yorkshire pudding :)

4-10 November 2023

Joey, Hollie Shaw and Tom Paterson travelled to meet our collaborators in Nanjing, China, at the Nanjing Medical University (Funded by teh Royal Society). They were famtistic hosts, and showed us around their wonderful facilities as well as the local area and plenty of delicious food! Thanks you to Dr Kai Zheng , Prof Yan Xu and all of the other staff and students who hosted us so graciously. We also enjoyed giving our talks to a packed seminar room!

23/9/2023 - Talk for Biofilm Odyssey international workshop

Joey was invited to give a talk at the international workshop run by the Sastra University, India, on human-centric engineered biofilm models and organised by Prof Adline Princy Soloman.

7/9/2023 - Joey elected as Chair-Elect of FIS


At the Microbiology Society Annual General Meeting today it was announced that Joey is the new Chair Elect of the Federation of Infection Societies (FIS) 2024-2026, and Chair 2026-2027. I'm really excited about this amazing opportunity to help shape the FIS conferences!

14/7/2023 - PhD graduation day 

Huge congratulations to microbiologists Dr Alice Seleiro, Dr Kittie Ansboro and Dr Rayan Binduhayyim (Kittie & Rayan co supervised by Joey) on their PhD graduations today. So lovely to see you all and celebrate your acheivements!!

6/6/2023 - MSc poster day 

Our two MSc in AMR project students, Amy Hopkins and Julia Rzasaka, presented their posters from their projects today. They both did a fantastic job presenting their work. 

7-8 /6/2023 OMIG/OMPG ECR symposium 2023

We ran a joint OMIG/OMPG 2 day ECR meeting here in Sheffield for ECRs interested in oral microbiology, immunology, pathology and medicine. There were some excellent talks from an enthusaistic group. Lovely to see old faces and meet new colleagues.

6/6/2023 Congratulations Hassan!

Congratulations to Hassan (Alhassan Alrafaie) on passing his PhD viva! Hassan was an absoloute pleasure to have in the lab, supervised by Prof Graham Stafford and co-supervised by Joey. He did some really exciting phage work!

29/3/2023 Congratulations Rawan!!

We were so proud and happy for Rawan Alshalan who passed her PhD viva with flying colours. Sadly we couldn't celebrate in person as it was a remote viva but we managed a remote party online :). Thanks to examiners Freya Harrison and Esther Karunakaran for examinng her work on novel polymer based quorum sensing inhibitots. 

4/2/23 - 10/2/23 - Joey and Hollie visit Pune! 

Joey and Hollie spent a fantstic few days in Pune with collaborators Karishma Kaushik and Nizam Shaikh as a return trip on our Royal Society funded international exchange project 'Bridging the Gap'. Food, company, and science were all excellent, Joey and Hollie both gave talks, and we were thoroughly impressed with the facilities in Pune. We would love to come back soon, thank you for hosting us Kaushik lab!!

23/12/2022 - Book chapter published :)

Just to end the year on a lovely high note, our book chapter on modelling  polymicrobial biofilms using peridontitis as an example has been published today. Thank you to co-authors Kittie Ansboro, Cher Farrugia and Graham Stafford, and Editors Karishma Kaushik and Sophie Darch. See Publications for details.

9/12/22 - DOUBLE VIVA CELEBRATIONS!

Huuuuge congratulations to Kittie Ansboro and Ahmed Almuntashiri on both passing the PhD vivas today! In a Department first, both Kittie and Ahmed are supervised by Graham Stafford (PI) with Joey as cosupervisor. Thank you to the examiners and to all who helped celebrate our PhD twins. A fantastic day, and we are incredibly happy for you both!

16/11/22 - MRC IAA Grant Success - with Sarah Forbes


We had some great news in a successful MRC IAA grant application! Sarah Forbes (Sheffield Hallam University) is PI on a project, with Chris Whiteoak (Alcala University, Spain) and Joey where we will be looking at anti-infective cyclic carbonate functionalized cellulose surfaces against prosthetic implant associated pathogens. Looking forward to srtaing work on this exciting project! 

22-27/8/2022 - Bridging the 'Gap' - A Royal Society exchange visit with the Kaushik Lab


We were thrilled to host Karishma and Nizam from Pune University for the week as part of our Royal Society International Exchange. We put together their wound milieu fluid with our skin model and gor some exciting results! Fantastic to see you both and hear about your work and lives. Looking forward to the return trip to see you in Pune!

Some of the lab very much enjoyed the annual Microbiology Society meeting in Belfast. Here's PhD researcher Hollie with her poster :)

31/3/22: New International collaboration grant awarded!


Joey and Dr Kai Zheng (pictured) and Prof Yan Xu fron Nanjing Medical University were awarded a Royal Society International Exchange fellowship grant. We will spend time in each others labs working on a project joint funded by the NSFC on photothermal bioactive glass formulations, with antimicrobial and osteoimmunomodulatory activities for periodontitis treatment. Joey and Kai first met as researchers working on the international EU funded MOZART project when he was working in Aldo Boccaccini's biomaterials lab in Erlangen, Germany, and stayed in touch when teh project ended, We can't wait to visit Nanjing!

4/1/22 Happy New Year from the Shepherd Lab!

We wish you a happy and successful 2022. We have a new PhD researcher and two new MSc students starting with us in the next couple of months, plus conferences (Microbiology Society and, hopefully, Eurobiofilms to start with!), exciting science, new collaborations, talks and papers in the pipeline for this year. Bring on 2022 :)

20/12/21 - The last event of the year, Joey hosted this years annual White Rose Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Group (BiTEG) meeting. Excellent keynotes from Prof Liam Grover and Dr Asha Patel, and a jam packed day of exciting reserach presented by ECR and PhD researchers from Leeds, York and Sheffield Universities. Well done all, a fast paced and incredible day to see they ear out! *pictured, the hosting set up :)

9/12/21 - Joey gave a talk as invited speaker at the Microbiome Connect: Skin EU conference on our labs use of tissue engineered skin as a useful tool with many applications 

15/11/21 - We welcome Jason Cheong and Mikey van der Laan to the lab for their undergraduate projects. Hi both!

8-9/11/21 FIS/HIS meeting. Joey Co-Chaired and judged the FIS (Federation of Infection Societies) Infection Science Award session at FIS 2021 with the wonderful Dr Tina Joshi. The standard was very high, congratulations to all!

9/9/21 - we welcome PhD researcher Shivani Joshi to the lab! Shivani is cosupervised by Joey (PI Cheryl Miller, CoI Paul Hatton) and is working with new antimicrobial hydroxyapatite pastes. Great to have you on board Shivani!! 

7/9/21 - Excellent talks at this years BioMedEng conference including from our PhD researcher Rayan, who did a great job presenting his work on antibacterial bioglasses .

1/9/21 - OMIG symposium at the annual BSODR meeting at the University of Birmingham went well with some great speakers. Chaired by our very own Prof Graham Stafford, OMIG Chair. 

20/8/21 - our Academic Unit (Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Medicine) had our annual Summer Walk out in the peaks - little Luna needed a ride at one point! 

8/7/21 - Hollie presented her work on LIPUS at the Florey Staph GBI symposium alongside other S.aureus researchers from the UK and Ireland. Great work Hollie. 

2/7/2021 - The return of the MICRO LAB SUMMER WALK. A lovely day out yomping in the country, with cows, ice cream, and yes, nettles. Happy days, great to see everyone! 

1/7/21 - Joey and ex-team members Jacob Pattem (now in Nottingham) & Toby Holmes (now at Covance) had their paper on using AFM to interrogate forces between PNIPAM polymers/S.aureus and corneas  published today :) 

24/6/21 - Rayan won a very well deserved second place at the Faculty PGR day for his excellent 'Gone in 60 seconds' presentation video. Well done Rayan!!

7/6/21 - lab member Hollie Shaw was selected to present her work on LIPUS and S.aureus biofilms at the Society for Applied Microbiology (SfAM) annual conference. Her presentation went without a hitch, well done Hollie!

In very happy news, friend of the lab Maha Omran passed her PhD viva with minor corrections today! Supervised by Prof Cheryl Miller, Dr Candice Majewski & Dr Rob Moorehead with Joey also on the team, Maha successfully defended her work on investigating materials for production of antimicrobial 3D printed orbital floor implants. HUGE congratulations Maha, well deserved!!

Our paper, Use of silver-based additives for the development of antibacterial functionality in Laser Sintered polyamide 12 parts received 3,239 article downloads in 2020, placing it as one of the top 100 downloaded materials science papers for Scientific Reports in 2020. In fact it was the 16th most downloaded! It's also in the top 5% of all research outputs scored by Altmetric. Well done team, amazing job!!!

26/3/21 - We cohosted the OMIG PGR Prize Symposium 2021. A fantastic day of talks and poster flash presentations from the OMIG PGR community - many thanks to cohosts/chairs Ricarda Streich and Sarah Kuehne, and huge congratulations to prizewinners  Tracy Young and Aileen Delaney. Brilliant stuff, well done everyone!

18 & 19/3/21 - It's the annual School Research day (#SoCD2021), with the PGR day on the 18th where our excellent PGRs presented their research in the form of posters, flash presentations, and longer oral presentations. We were VERY pleased in our lab that two group members, Rawan and Hollie, won first and second place in the 2nd year PGR poster presentations. Well done both, and we will celebrate properly as soon as we can! 

27/2/21: Joey was invited to be a panellist on the India Biofilms Society (@IndiaBiofilms) 2nd Biofilm Baithak, to discuss experiences of India-UK collaborations in biofilm research. Very interesting discussions had and looking forward to more collaborative work coming out of India.

16/2/21: Our UK-Pakistan British Council grant has now been fully signed off, and we are excited to start in March!

10/11/20: Joey is a judge for the Healthcare Infection Society 2020 annual FIS/HIS conference. Some excellent talks, and difficult to pick winners...
