SELSA believes applying skills in a real world setting will help students get ahead in their careers. Our requirements are for students to complete 4 high impact experiences whilst they are part of the programme. These are split into work based elements (such as internships, placements or part-time jobs) as well as service elements, where students are giving back to the community (such as volunteering, outreach activities or student mentoring programmes).
Although students might identify their own opportunities to do with through placements, SELSA offers two different opportunities for students to work with other providers which will enable them to develop their skills and networks
SELSA is proud to be working with Vulcan to the Sky Trust, a charity based in Doncaster which preserves the iconic Vulcan XH558 aircraft. Although this aircraft is no longer permitted to fly, the project aims to inspire the next generation of engineers. SELSA is working with Vulcan to the Sky to design and implement an educational intervention for the Get up to Speed (GUTS) engineering and science showcase using the Vulcan's wingtip. After the showcase, the intervention will be on permanent display at Skills Street, Gulliver's Valley, Sheffield.
Have you had a problem which you are unsure how you are going to solve? The SELSA Hackathon takes students through a design sprint where they talk to people to get an understanding the issue and then work in teams to solve the problem. This takes place over 2 days and is typically in either the Easter break or immediately after exams.
