In the photo I am connecting two lengths of pipework with a Bauer connection. This method enables us to direct flow from the final effluent chamber and into the activated sludge plant. The process is designed to stir the hardened sludge, making it easier to remove.

This photo was taken on my placement with Pell Frischmann, when I helped to survey a Network Rail property in London, where I used a total station to coordinate points which we had 3D scanned the previous day. Interestingly, the surveyor I was assisting graduated from the University of Sheffield two years ago meaning we had a lot in common!

Recently myself and colleagues at Mott MacDonald had the opportunity to visit and tour the site of the biggest waste water treatment plant in Ireland, this being the Ringsend WWTP Facility in County Dublin. Built in 2005, over 40% of Ireland's water treatment capacity is provided through this plant alone, catering for a staggering 1.64 million PE; so it was a quite the privilege to get to see it in action!

We were on the water to inspect the sheet piles looking for which piles still have pitching holes left that were used during the installation that will need to be patched up.

We were investigating a fault on one of the pressure relief systems of one of our 20T FP silos, and the rest of the technical team and I couldn’t resist the view!
These silos have multiple pressure relief systems, which are essential during high pressure operations such as blending: pulses of compressed air from the bottom of the silo are released, ensuring the pellets of product are evenly mixed before being packed and shipped off to our customers.
Also, behind me you can see the 30m powder silos that continually feed one of our key raw materials to the process, but the view from there is definitely not for the faint of heart!

Visiting the IVTF (In Vessel Test Facility) which is a remote handling training facility and is a copy of the JET (Joint European Torus) fusion reactor. Using the computer vision software we developed, we measured the deflection of the long reach robot inside the IVTF. The opportunity to develop my confidence as a cybernetics engineer in the RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments) department has been wonderful so far (and I have nearly learnt what all the acronyms mean).
