We pride ourselves on the high quality education that we provide to our students here at Sheffield.
The Faculty of Engineering provides world-class engineering education to over 6000 students every year. Cutting-edge facilities such as the Diamond allow us to achieve this, providing our students with practical educational experiences in unique and state-of-the-art teaching laboratories.
This site is a portal to some of the amazing teaching and educational practices that we have developed here at Sheffield. All content here is released as Open Educational Resources that are free for anyone to use or adapt as they wish (see full licence terms for each individual resource).
"Open Educational Resources (OER) are learning, teaching and research materials in any format and medium that reside in the public domain or are under copyright that have been released under an open licence, that permit no-cost access, re-use, re-purpose, adaptation and redistribution by others."
The impact that OER can have on the world is considerable. The process of making educational resources freely available via the internet enables anyone to learn regardless of age, geographic location or economic situation. This aligns strongly with the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development, specifically Sustainable Development Goal 4: "to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all."
The University of Sheffield supports and encourages the re-use, re-purposing and adaptation of existing OER for teaching and learning, and also supports and encourages those who wish to create and share their own OER (see here for more details). A University-wide OER Working Group has been established, which aims to encourage and promote these practices amongst university staff. You can find more details about the Working Group and the OER support they provide on their website.
The Open Engineering Project is led by Dr Tom Howard (a University Teacher in Engineering) and aims to support the adoption of OER within the Engineering Faculty. This project is one of a number of workstreams of the Centre for Engineering Education (CEE), an initiative to support educational practices across the Engineering Faculty at the University. You can find out more about the Centre for Engineering Education here.
