What is the Role of the Engineering Education Researcher in post-COVID UK?

The rate of technological advancement means that today’s engineering graduates are likely to take on a variety of roles during their careers, and are thus required to demonstrate a more varied array of skills and a wider range of knowledge. This, alongside the unpredictable nature of the changing world around us, is putting increased emphasis on the role of engineering educators and the pedagogies that they apply. COVID-19 has further heightened the need for change within UK engineering education.

This session will begin by summarizing some of the developments that have been made within UK engineering education since the mid-20th century and focus on some of the lessons that may be learnt from previous research in the field. The role that engineering education research plays in any changes made to engineering education will be discussed, as well as some of the barriers to engineering education research in the UK.

The session will provide an opportunity for attendees to participate interactively by sharing their views on the role of researchers and to share what they feel is both needed and wanted, in order to help bring about change.
