Magical Socialism-The Twilight of Magical Revolution
I Film Screening Event (2018)
The Spanish Section invites you to a film screening about Venezuela with Q-A session
Film Context
Has the Bolivarian Revolution died with its leader’s death?
In the Western World, Venezuela ‘s situation gets thrown around to by those on the left and right as an ‘example’ - why “socialism failed”, why “nationalisation is good” - to illustrate vacuous points on Twitter disputes. This belittles the severity of the situation; dehumanises its actors. There is so much more to this country’s recent experience beyond this tragicomic depiction.
The screening
The session will begin with the film after a short introduction, and will be followed by a Q & A.
The film is an overview of the current crisis in Venezuela. Starting with Chávez’s death, in 2013, “The Twilight of Magical Revolution” chronicles the rise and fall of Chávez’s ‘Bolivarian Revolution’.
Interviewing senior politicians (Teodoro Petkoff and Douglas Bravo), scholars (Margarita López Maya and Manuel Caballero), chavistas (Antonia Muñoz, PSUV) and opposition leaders (Leopoldo López) - among others - the documentary provides a balanced critical perspective on the Bolivarian Revolution. From the people that lived it first-hand.
