Welcome to the website for Mapping Music for Wellbeing Sheffield (MMWS). This project received funding from Research England and is run by researchers in the Music Mind Machine lab at the University of Sheffield, Department of Music. We are interested to know more about how music is integrated into services, training, resources, facilities, and working practices offered to others that may contribute to their health and wellbeing.

Main research questions:

  • What initiatives and activities related to music and wellbeing are available in Sheffield?

  • What infrastructure and resources enable these uses of music?

  • What are the main challenges for and gaps in provision of music for wellbeing?

Research activities:

We conducted a survey, interviews, created a map and continue to organise meetings (online or in person) to create networking and dissemination opportunities. The outcomes of the project are used to formulate policy implications.

While COVID-19 has interfered with the research planning and activities, the relevance of research in this area has only increased, which is to investigate support structures and challenges for professionals to work across arts & health provision.

Outcomes and ways to get involved:

Map – consult our map to gain insight in activities of music for wellbeing in Sheffield or add your events and activities

Survey – let us know about how you use music for health and wellbeing

Summary report – read about our findings and discussions of implications for policy

Conference and webinar – participate in dissemination and networking at our upcoming Virtual Meeting on November 13th 2020.

Virtual meeting 13th November, 2-4 pm

The team of Mapping Music for Wellbeing, Sheffield are organising a virtual meeting, with the format of a round table discussion, with the aim of bringing together practitioners and professionals of music for wellbeing in and around Sheffield.

One of the objectives of our project was a networking opportunity for music and wellbeing providers and practitioners, to initiate a discussion that would explore if there is a common ground for continuation and a shared voice towards policy makers. Given the current circumstance, we’d like to propose a virtual round table discussion to serve that purpose, incorporating, of course, the consequences of the pandemic on services and practices into the event.

We are proposing a virtual meeting for 13th November, 2-4pm (UK time) consisting of three elements:

a) brief reminder of mapping project outcomes,

b) round of reflections on challenges and opportunities for music for wellbeing from attending partners,

c) policy contour definition.

Note that part b) asks input from attendees with respect to their specific situations and organisations. In part c), we would like to explore with you how the original outcomes of the project need to be updated in light of the pandemic, with the aim of formulating the contours of a policy brief.
