Slides for a presentation for Deakin University Library on 14 August 2024 titled 'Critical Librarianship: Action & Agency in the Library.'
Critical Librarianship (CritLib) questions power and challenges the ‘traditional library model’ and its inherent bias, with the goal of dismantling inequalities and empowering communities. It entails applying critical thinking lenses to library practices. In this presentation, Emilia discusses the idea of libraries as social actors with agency and how our professional practice is informed by our values.
In addition to critical librarianship, this presentation draws on critical library assessment practices, international relations and cultural studies, and social research concepts and methodologies.
Reflective questions included in this resource can be applied to professional practice, and used as a pedagogical tool or a prompt in the process of information searching and knowledge production. Their purpose is to guide reflection and reflexivity on whose social reality or knowledge system we are reproducing, maintaining, or privileging.
