BIEU20 BEng bioengineering
Regulations for 2022 -23 and AFTER
level 1
Passing Level 1 - General University Regulations
Students will be permitted to proceed from Level 1 to Level 2:
If they have passed 120 credits in Level 1 (i.e. all modules have a grade greater than 40)
This will appear on the student record as "P" (i.e. Pass).
OR
At the discretion of the Examiners*
If they have passed at least 100 credits in Level 1
Have attained a grade of ≥ 30 in failed modules
If they have passed FCE1001
This will appear on the student record as "PC" (i.e. Conceded Pass).
*This is not automatic and will be the decision of the Exam Board.
New Rules Regarding ‘Compensated Pass’ Grades (within 10% of a Pass Grade) Accreditation
For students commencing Year 1 (Y1) of study in or after September 2022, the Engineering Council has introduced new rules intended to ensure all students graduating from accredited degrees achieve the learning outcomes expected by the profession. This means that in order to graduate with an accredited degree you will need to:
meet the requirements of the programme regulations for your degree;
and graduate with no more than 30 ‘compensated pass’ credits across all years of your degree (Y1, Y2 and Y3 for BEng, and Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4 for MEng).
Y1 for all UG and integrated MEng degrees
If you have been awarded a ‘compensated pass’ for any module, you will be offered an additional resit attempt (on top of the two resit attempts you are entitled to for each module at Y1, under the University’s General Regulations). While you may be eligible (under the University’s General Regulations) to progress to Y2 of your programme carrying up to 20 ‘compensated pass’ credits (with a grade of 30 or above), you will be strongly encouraged to take up the opportunity of an additional resit in order to minimise the risk of graduating with an unaccredited degree, by accumulating more than 30 ‘compensated pass’ credits over the course of your whole degree. A resit will provide you with the chance to pass a module listed as ‘must pass’ in the programme regulations of your degree, or change a fail grade into a pass grade. This is particularly important to consider early in your degree, as you will have fewer overall resit opportunities as you progress to later years, and you are limited at 30 compensated ‘pass credits’ for your whole degree.
level 2
Passing Level 2 - General University Regulations
Students will be permitted to proceed from Level 2 to Level 3:
If they have passed 120 credits in Level 2 (i.e. all modules have a grade greater than 40)
This will appear on the student record as "P" (i.e. Pass).
OR
At the discretion of the Examiners*
If they have passed at least 100 credits in Level 2
If they have passed all modules which are pre-requisites for Level 3 modules
If they have passed FCE2001
This will appear on the student record as "PC" (i.e. Conceded Pass).
*This is not automatic and will be the decision of the Exam Board.
Y2, Y3 (for all degrees) and Y4 (for integrated MEng degrees) Accreditation
If you have been awarded a ‘compensated pass’ for any module in Y2, Y3, or Y4, you will be offered an additional resit attempt. While you may be eligible (under the University’s General Regulations) to progress to Y3 or Y4 carrying up to 20 ‘compensated pass’ credits each year (with no minimum grade) you will be strongly encouraged to take up the opportunity of an additional resit in order to minimise the risk of graduating with an unaccredited degree, by accumulating more than 30 ‘compensated pass’ credits over the course of your whole degree. This is particularly important to consider early in your degree, as you will have fewer overall resit opportunities as you progress to Y3 and Y4, and you are limited to 30 compensated ‘pass credits’ for your whole degree.
If you accumulate more than 30 ‘compensated pass’ credits across Years 1, 2, and 3 for a BEng degree or Years 1, 2, 3, and 4 of an MEng degree, you cannot be recommended for an accredited degree. Instead, you will be offered the alternative unaccredited award of Bioengineering Technology degree
Transferring to MEng
Students who have obtained a weighted mean grade in Level 2 of ≥ 54.5 will be offered the option of transferring to BIEU19 MEng Bioengineering following the Spring Exam Boards.
level 3
Passing Level 3 - General University Regulations
Students will be awarded a BEng degree:
If they have obtained 240 credits at Levels 2 and 3
OR
At the discretion of the Examiners*
If they have obtained ≥ 200 credits at Levels 2 and 3
If at least 90 credits obtained at Levels 3 are at FHEQ Level F6
If they have obtained a weighted mean grade of ≥ 39.5
If they have passed their Final Year Project
OR
Students who are awarded ≥ 200 credits at Levels 2 and 3, but who fail to satisfy the Examiners in respect of the other criteria detailed above may be recommended for the award of a BEng degree without Honours.
*This is not automatic and will be the decision of the Exam Board.
Failing Level 3 - General University Regulations
Students are only permitted 1 attempt at modules in Level 3.
Students who, at the end of Level 3, fail to satisfy the requirements to be awarded an BEng degree may be permitted 1 further attempt at passing failed modules, in order to be awarded a BEng degree, without Honours. Resits would take place at the earliest opportunity, which may be the August resit period or the following academic year. All resits are capped at 40.
Y3 (for all degrees) Accreditation
If you accumulate more than 30 ‘compensated pass’ credits across Years 1, 2 and 3 for a BEng degree, or Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 of an MEng degree, you cannot be recommended for an accredited degree. Instead, you will be offered the alternative unaccredited award of Bioengineering Technology Degree
