Passing Level 1

Students will be permitted to proceed from Level 1 to Level 2:

• If they have passed 120 credits in Level 1 (i.e. all modules have a grade greater than 40)

This will appear on the student record as "P" (i.e. Pass).

OR

At the discretion of the Examiners*

• If they have passed at least 100 credits in Level 1

• Have attained a grade of ≥ 30 in failed modules

• If they have passed FCE1001

This will appear on the student record as "PC" (i.e. Conceded Pass).

*This is not automatic and will be the decision of the Exam Board.

Students will only be eligible to apply for the Study Abroad Scheme if they attain a grade of ≥ 60 and pass Level 1.

Passing Level 2

Students will be permitted to proceed from Level 2 to Level 3:

• If they have passed 120 credits in Level 2 (i.e. all modules have a grade greater than 40)

• If they have obtained a weighted mean grade of ≥ 54.5

This will appear on the student record as "M" (i.e. Progress to MEng).

OR

At the discretion of the Examiners*

• If they have passed at least 100 credits in Level 2

• If they have obtained a weighted mean grade of ≥ 49.5 in Level 2**

• If they have passed all modules which are pre-requisites for Level 3 modules

• If they have passed FCE2001

This will appear on the student record as "MC" (i.e. Conceded Pass to MEng).

*This is not automatic and will be the decision of the Exam Board. Permission to proceed on a MEng programme will be given on the basis of examination performance and other criteria. There is no absolute right to proceed for those students who obtain relevant weighted mean grade.

** Although University Regulations permit students to be considered to proceed on MEng programmes as outlined above, in practice the Examiners normally require students to have achieved a weighted mean grade of ≥ 54.5 in order to proceed.

Students will only be eligible to apply for the Study Abroad Scheme if they attain a grade of ≥ 60 and pass Level 2.

Not Meeting the MEng Progression Threshold

Students who do not satisfy the requirements to proceed onto Level 3 of BIEU19 Bioengineering will be permitted to transfer to Level 3 BIEU20 BEng Bioengineering if they have met the progression criteria

Passing Level 3

Students will be permitted to proceed from Level 3 to Level 4:

• If they have passed 120 credits in Level 3 (i.e. all modules have a grade greater than 40)

• If they have obtained a weighted mean grade of ≥ 49.5

This will appear on the student record as "P" (i.e. Pass).

OR

At the discretion of the Examiners*

• If they have passed at least 100 credits in Level 3

• If they have obtained a weighted mean grade of ≥ 49.5 in Level 3

• If they have passed all modules which are pre-requisites for Level 4 modules

This will appear on the student record as "PC" (i.e. Conceded Pass).

*This is not automatic and will be the decision of the Exam Board.

Failing Level 3

• Students are only permitted 1 attempt at modules in Level 3.

• Students who, at the end of Level 3, fail to satisfy the requirements to proceed to Level 4:

  • • • • May be considered for the award of BEng Bioengineering, with Honours, should they meet the criteria. This degree is awarded where the Final Year Project has been attempted and passed.

        • May be considered for the award of BEng Biotechnology, with Honours, should they meet the criteria. This degree is awarded where the Final Year Project has not been attempted.

        • Students who are not eligible to be considered for either of the above awards, may be permitted one further attempt at passing failed modules, in order to be awarded a BEng degree, without Honours. Resits would take place at the earliest opportunity, which may be the August resit period or the following academic year. All resits are capped at 40.

Resitting Level 3 Modules for Credit

• Students are not permitted to resit Level 3 modules for progression purposes, except in exceptional circumstances.

• Students who have been awarded a Conceded Pass may repeat failed modules for credit only 1 further instance. 

• Any permitted resits would be capped at 40. 

• Students who wish to resit failed modules should contact the Student Support Office. 

Passing Level 4

Students will be awarded an MEng degree:

• If they have obtained 360 credits at Levels 2, 3 and 4

OR

At the discretion of the Examiners*

• If they have obtained ≥ 320 credits at Levels 2, 3 and 4

• If at least 90 credits obtained at Levels 3 and 4 are at FHEQ Level F7

• If they have obtained a weighted mean grade of ≥ 49.5

• If they have passed their Final Year Project

OR

• Students who are awarded ≥ 320 credits at Levels 2, 3 and 4, but who fail to satisfy the Examiners in respect of the other criteria detailed above may be recommended for the award of a BEng degree, with or without Honours.

It should be noted that Level 4 modules have a pass grade of 50.

Failing Level 4

• Students are only permitted 1 attempt at modules in Level 4.

• Students who, at the end of Level 4, fail to satisfy the requirements to be awarded an MEng degree:

  • • • • May be considered for the award of BEng Bioengineering, with Honours, should they meet the criteria. This degree is awarded where a grade ≥ 40 has been achieved in the Final Year Project.

        • May be considered for the award of BEng Biotechnology, with Honours, should they meet the criteria. This degree is awarded where the Final Year Project has been failed.

        • Students who are not eligible to be considered for either of the above awards, may be permitted one further attempt at passing failed modules, in order to be awarded a BEng degree, without Honours. Resits would take place at the earliest opportunity, which may be the August resit period or the following academic year. All Level 4 resits are capped at 50.
