Mentoring Opportunities!

We’re putting a call out for volunteers for our mentoring project!

Looking to start the week after reading week, we want volunteers to engage in one-on-one mentoring with secondary school students. Check out this document for more info. You will need a DBS check and be able to commit to a minimum of 4 sessions over 4 weeks.

This is a great opportunity for volunteering experience that’s also a fantastic way to share your passion for history with others and gain great experience for your CV. Please email here or DM us on Instagram with any questions!

Forge Valley School Visit, 20th February 2023

In February, HinC headed to Forge Valley School to run a Hands on History session. We worked with three groups of year-7s, all of whom were really engaged with what we had to say! This session was focused on the 20th century home, with a partiuclar focus on homes in Sheffield. We got the pupils to think about the ways that home life has changed over the past 100 years and what signs of the past are present in their home!

If volunteering is something you are interested in, keep a look out on our social media in the academic year for more information!

We've uploaded our first two submissions for Volume 23 of our student-led e-zine! Head over to the New Histories website (linked on our homepage) to read Emma Smith's contemplation of the concept of communal living and Max Carson's exploration of the significance of the village church.

If you'd still like to contribute, there's plenty of time! The deadline for submissions is May 15th, and all the details you need can be found on our Instagram account.

HinC Training Session, 23 February 2022

On the 23 February, our team met with our new volunteers and went through some the projects we run hands on! Details on how to get involved below.

HinC Training Session, 23 February 2022

Our department leader Dr Miriam Dobson led our volunteers through a 'Hands on History' session which we run in local schools.  Volunteers felt and saw historical artefacts in front of them, to understand how they were made and what purpose they played in the past.

Dr Lucy Brown, our department's leader of Witness History also explained the theme of Witness History's outreach for this year: 'Sheffield in the mid-twentieth century'.

Our Witness History training session will take place on the 9 March (location and time TBC). In this session, Witness History volunteers will be trained in interviewing and recording oral testimonies so we can collate a oral collage of what life was like for those in Sheffield during the 50s, 60s and 70s.
