Society Elections

What is an AGM?

An AGM is an Annual General Meeting where a Societies' new committee should be elected. All Societies and Committees must hold their election (AGM) during ‘Society Election Fortnight’ which, this year, runs from 19th April to 2nd May 2021.

Provided you're a registered student at The University of Sheffield, you're eligible to run to become a member of a Committee.

Why should I run?

Every year around 2700 students hold committee roles, here are just a few reasons why you should join them:

  1. Make a difference to the lives of our students at the best SU in the UK!

  2. Lead one of our 350+ societies & committees!

  3. Develop skills and gain experiences that will last a lifetime and enhance your employability!

  4. Be part of a team that will create memorable events, campaigns and activities!

  5. Be one of the 9%! (only 9% of the student population will hold a committee role this year)

  6. Receive training & ongoing support from your SU staff team - so no experience needed!

  7. Make the most of an exciting & much more “normal” Society & Committee year!!

Society & Committee Training

We offer full training for all core roles, events, trips, Health & Safety - and more besides - through our Society & Committee Training Programme.

This training happens in May, October & early Spring and is open to every elected committee member.

Being a Committee member is a fantastic opportunity, but you don't have to take our word for it...

“I am particularly proud of how well we have worked as a committee this year. We have had plenty of highs and great committee socials. This has led to a strong cohesive team effort and the production of many successful events.”

(President)

“I am just generally proud of managing my time and working with our committee, trying to make everyone's experience good and useful. I have enjoyed this experience overall and it has shaped my university experience as a whole.”

(President)

“I think my main achievement was making a profit for the society but keeping all the events affordable for the members(looking at the previous years - keeping the cost of events the same or cheaper) which encouraged them to attend.”

(Treasurer)

“It was definitely a great experience that I have never had before. We worked together, planned things together, had fun together.”

(Sports Officer)

“Being part of so many different experiences my Society offered was second to none.”

(VP & Secretary)

“I felt like being part of this society helped me grow. When I applied, I had no prior experience so the training and the help that I received from the committee members meant a lot to me, as I started to be able to do things on my own.”

(Events Officer)

“I really enjoyed helping to make people feel like part of a community!”

(Secretary)
