The FREEDEM project looked at how care homes help residents with dementia who walk or wander. The goal was to make this safer and more beneficial. It included a review of the scientific literature, interviews with staff and relatives, and observations in care homes. Through workshops with care home managers and staff, we have developed evidence-based guidance and resources, which are available on this website.
Our handbooks are designed to help care home staff and managers support residents with dementia to walk safely and purposefully, promoting their independence and wellbeing. They provide strategies, practical tools, and resources to help you and your care home put research findings into practice.

We were interviewed about FREEDEM for the Dementia Researcher podcast. Researchers Bryony-Waters Harvey and Emma Hock were joined by Conny McGowan, Head of Care in a care home, to discuss what we can learn from the FREEDEM project.
We partnered with the Centre for International Research on Care, Labour and Equalities (CIRCLE) to bring the FREEDEM findings to life in a comic, which explores how care home staff uphold dignity, independence, and rights by supporting people living with dementia to make and communicate their own choices in everyday care.
Our literature review found strategies to support safe wandering in care homes across five areas (personalised care, monitoring, navigation, managing access, and food and drink) and explored how they work, for whom, and under what circumstances.
