We are looking to develop a clear and consistent framework for Data Steward roles at the University of Sheffield. Our aim is to provide structured guidance on the Data Steward profession, including examples of the skills required at different grades, to support recruitment, role clarity, and career development.
We’re aiming to create something similar to the excellent framework developed by UCL’s Centre for Advanced Research Computing: UCL ARC Job Descriptions and Framework for Research Data Stewards.
We’re keen to hear from members of the Data Stewards Network who would be interested in contributing to this work. If yes, please complete our short survey here.
All responses will be anonymised.
We’re keen to build this collaboratively and ensure it reflects the range of practices and perspectives across the sector. We also hope to contribute to work at the European level, led by the Research Data Alliance, to formalise Research Data Stewards career tracks.
We are inviting Research Technical Professionals (Technicians, Data Stewards, etc.) to take part in a workshop aimed at shaping how contributions to research are recognised. This pilot project supports the University of Sheffield’s Research Culture Action Plan and Technicians’ Commitment Action Plan and focuses on implementing the Contributor Role Taxonomy (CRediT) to ensure Research Technical Professionals are acknowledged appropriately in research outputs.
The workshop will explore the diverse roles Research Technical Professionals play in research, identify how these map to CRediT roles, and highlight any gaps. Participants will help co-create examples of contributions and discuss models of recognition aligned with both journal policies and personal and institutional aspirations to recognise research-enabling staff.
Outputs from the workshop will supplement the university's recently published guidance on using the Contributor Role Taxonomy, and inform ongoing work to recognise the contributions of Research Technical Professionals at Sheffield: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/openresearch/home/contributor-role-taxonomy-credit
The workshop will take place from 10am on Wednesday 11th June at The Wave, Seminar Room 11.
Morning refreshments and lunch will be provided.
There are 30 places available. If you are interested in taking part, please sign up using this form (https://forms.gle/ughiBeQbTjgTG5pP7) and let us know of any dietary requirements or allergies.
We particularly encourage data stewards who are technical staff and/or in Arts, Humanities, and Social Science disciplines to sign up, but all are welcome.
We look forward to seeing you at the workshop!
