‘Hair Works’ explores the transformative power of hair - imagining the former site of Castle Market as a new type of social condenser, centred around ‘all-things-hair’. The project brings together a vibrant mix of boutique salons, Turkish barbers, afro hairdressers, braiding shops and educational spaces to become a new cultural melting pot.
During the late 1960s Castle Market was a popular destination for shoppers in Sheffield; the surrounding area was a thriving commercial and social hotspot. Unfortunately, after the market was demolished in 2015, the area lost its identity - now there are few shops that remain open, and footfall is low.
Currently, the Castlegate site is scheduled for redevelopment, with Sheffield City Council securing significant funding from central government to carry out the work. Sheffield City Council have conducted various consultations with local stakeholders and work is expected to commence in summer 2023. The project takes into account local stakeholder needs and considers how things could be done differently to work for local people.
