Year: 2017 onwards
In Partnership With: Sheffield City Council
In Collaboration With: Local Stakeholders
The School of Architecture has played a key role in the Castlegate co-production process since 2014. In 2017 this process was formalised via the initiation of the Castlegate Partnership - a long-standing network of local stakeholders in Castlegate organised by Sheffield City Council. The partnership consists of numerous local stakeholders representing community groups, arts and culture, independent business, the universities, local charities and the city council. The network was set up to encourage regular communication and transparency of process in the regeneration of Castlegate. Over the years there have been several presentations to the Castlegate Partnership by students from the School of Architecture of Live Projects based in the area. Carolyn Butterworth, Director of Live Works, has represented the School of Architecture on the Partnership since its inception in 2017 and in 2023 she took on the role of representing the University of Sheffield from Professor John Moreland, Department of Archaeology.
In 2023 the Castlegate Area Board was set up to act as a steering group for the delivery of the LUF projects. Several working groups report to the area board on key areas in the delivery of a regenerated Castlegate. Carolyn Butterworth represents the University of Sheffield on the Area Board and chairs one of these working groups, the Events Stewardship and Pioneers group. The ESP group is working with existing local arts and community initiatives to develop strategies for activation of the new Castle Park. Aspirations for the group include nurturing the existing cultural and social innovators, the 'pioneers', already active in the area and the delivery of new community and event facilities in the centre of the park - a co-design process being facilitated by Live Works.
