How are High Ability students identified at SHCSC?
At SHCSC, we use the CogAt test to identify our High Ability learners. The CogAt test is a group administered aptitude test made up of multiple choice questions to measure nonverbal, verbal, and quantitative reasoning skills. The test is given to all kindergarten, second, and fourth grade students. After the CogAt is given, scores are analyzed by the High Ability committee and students are then identified as High Ability in Language Arts, Math, or both. Secondary factors are also reviewed by the committee. SHCSC families are notified by district email once their student is identified as High Ability, usually mid-way through second grade.
