21st century learning acknowledges the arts as a core subject. Educators, business leaders and visionary thinkers recognize that the ability to be creative is essential; therefore the primary goal of performing arts education is to instill knowledge and skills regarding three artistic processes: creating, performing, and responding. Students who possess these skills are better able to tolerate ambiguity, explore new realms of possibility, express their own thoughts and feelings and understand the perspectives of others. Furthermore, studies suggest that study of the arts can help produce globally aware, collaborative, and responsible citizens.
Performing arts students will develop, interpret and realize artistic knowledge and abilities that reflect the artistic processes of creating, performing and responding.
1. Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
2. Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
3. Refine and complete artistic work.
4. Select, analyze and interpret artistic work for presentation.
5. Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
6. Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work.
7. Perceive and analyze artistic work.
8. Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.
9. Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work.
10. Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
11. Relate artistic ideas and works to societal, cultural and historical contexts to deepen understanding.
