Teaching and Learning

Our Curriculum

As a British School Overseas, we are proud to offer the National Curriculum of England, enhanced by UAE subjects as mandated by the Ministry of Education.

Early Years (Foundation 1 & 2)

In our foundation classes, learning is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework, focusing on play-based, inquiry-led development.

Primary School (Years 1 – 6)

Our primary curriculum offers a rich, balanced blend of core subjects and specialist-led learning:

Taught by the Class Teacher: English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, Integrated Curriculum (History, Geography, Art, and Design Technology), Moral Education, Social Studies, and PSHE.
Taught by Specialist Teachers: PE, Music, Library, Arabic, and Islamic Studies (for our Muslim students).

School Supplies

To make your start as smooth as possible, students do not need to purchase any school books or stationery. All learning resources and classroom supplies are fully provided by the school.

BYOD - Bring Your Own Device

At SES we acknowledge that technology plays a vital role in today’s society. As educators, we must harness the positive aspects of technology and view it not as a distraction, but as a way of encouraging participation in lessons and as a means of enhancing the learning opportunities that we provide.

We believe that the use of IT affords us many opportunities:

It enables us to cater for a wider variety of learning styles
It increases engagement across the curriculum
It provides efficient accessibility to tools and resources for both teaching and learning
Many of the education publishers used at SES are now web based platforms. At present, pupils can only access as a cohort in class; the use of a device in school would allow for individual access.

In Primary, all pupils from Year 3 to Year 6 should have their own tablet in school every day.

Devices should be fully charged for the start of the school day.
Please ensure they are in protective cases.
The device that we recommend is the 11th Generation and later iPad, with a minimum 128GB and Wi-Fi-only model.
At SES, we believe that the use of digital devices across the school has led to significant benefits for learning, including better organisation, a closer dialogue between staff and students, creative lesson outcomes, even more engaging lessons and the ability to research and access expert knowledge instantly.
Please note that for those families who wish to remain device free at home, we have a facility at school which allows you to ‘check in’ your child’s device each evening.
There will be a meeting early in Term One to discuss parental control of devices and how we manage the devices on site.

Apple School
Our experience has shown that Apple iPads are best suited to our learning environment. As we work towards Apple School accreditation, pupils’ use of iPads will allow for a seamless connection between school Apple technology and their own.

If purchasing new, pupils will require ideally a 11th generation and later iPad (complete with cover). If your child already owns an iPad less than two years old this will work with the required apps and functions.

The optional choices include headphones, keyboard and stylus.

Educational Activities
During Lessons personal devices will be used to access resources and complete assignments.

Educational activities may include researching information, producing documents, analysing data, producing animations/movies, reading e-books, creating blogs, taking notes, or scheduling events. The use of the device is at the sole discretion of the teacher.

Digital Citizenship
A focus of this initiative is Digital Citizenship, including the appropriate use of technology, and we aim to prepare all pupils to be responsible and effective contributors to the digital world of their future. BYOD will enable us to teach all pupils about digital skills, ethics and online safety in a timely manner which is age appropriate and relevant to their immediate needs and current learning.

Safe and Secure
To maintain a safe and secure learning environment, a filtered internet connection is provided for students. Additionally, students will only be able to use their device under the direct supervision of their teacher. Any unauthorised usage (including bus services) may result in the device being confiscated, searched, and privileges being revoked.

Responsibility
Students are solely responsible for their device. They must bring it to school fully charged. As with other personally owned items, Sharjah English School is not liable for loss, damage, misuse, or theft.

Screen Time
BYOD does not change the school’s policy on student use of mobile devices. These devices are only to be used in a selection of lessons with the permission of a teacher. At all other times they should be kept secure and out of sight. As a school, our aim is to promote an active, healthy lifestyle and achieving the correct balance between ‘screen time’ and other activities is very important to us. Devices will be used to enhance learning; pupils will still be expected to maintain their current high standards of written work across the curriculum.

Technical Support
Resources will be provided to help students connect their device to the school network. Please ensure that your child is familiar with how to use their device. Teachers will incorporate the use of your child’s device into learning where appropriate. In the event that their device is not compatible with the selected app your child will continue to have access to school-owned technology on the current rotational basis.

House System

Our house system is a key component of the pastoral care we provide across the school. Throughout their day, all students in Years 1 -6 will have opportunities to receive house points for a variety of reasons including endeavour, positive behaviour for learning and demonstrating the SES Learner Profile attributes. The total number of points awarded to each house is shared at weekly assemblies. Each term, the house with the most points is awarded the house trophy.

Upon admission to SES each student is allocated a house. Please refer to the induction email received from our Head of Primary, to see which house your child is in. Please note that siblings are placed in the same house. House Shirts are worn throughout the year and are available in Stitches uniform shop.

Note: Students in FS1 & FS2 do not need a House Shirt.

Communication and Apps

Regular and effective communication between home and school is a key factor in ensuring that all children achieve their potential.

Should parents wish to contact a teacher, they may do so at pick up/ drop off or via email. Your child’s class teacher will provide you with their contact details at the beginning of term. We aim to respond to all parent communication within 24 hours.

If parents have any concerns, the class teacher should be the first point of contact. If required, they will liaise with their Head of Year Group and the Deputy or Head of Primary.

Tapestry

The Foundation 1, 2 and Year 1 teachers use an online platform called Tapestry to communicate current learning and calendar arrangements with parents. Parents are encouraged to engage with the platform to allow you the opportunity to learn what your child is exploring in class. It will also allow you to be prepared and organised for any calendar events or school trips.

Class Dojo

Teachers from Y2 to Y 6 use an online platform called Class Dojo to communicate current learning and calendar arrangements with parents. Parents are encouraged to engage with the platform to allow you the opportunity to learn what your child is exploring in class. It will also allow you to be prepared and organised for any calendar events or school trips.

Engage

The school leadership and communications team communicate via the school management system Engage. The log in details for the platform will be issued in late August.

Reports are issued on Engage in terms 1 and 3.
Parent Consultation Evenings are booked through Engage and take place in Terms 1 and 2.
Extra Curricular Activties are booked via Engage at the start of every term.

General Notices

Uniform

We operate a ‘no hat, no play’ policy in our outdoor areas. All pupils should bring a hat to school every day.
Long hair should be tied back and away from the child’s face.
No jewellery is to be worn at school, with the exception of small ‘stud’ earrings. We encourage pupils to wear analogue watches as a real-life link to their learning in Maths. However, other watches may be worn as long as they are not connected to the internet.
Pupils in Y3-6 require a rucksack. Please note that trolley bags are not accepted due to limited space in rooms.

Healthy Eating

We encourage healthy eating at school and as such, chocolate, crisps, carbonated drinks and ’fast food’ items are not allowed. If the contents of the lunchbox are unhealthy, parents will be notified.
Food items that are easy to pick up and that can be eaten cold are required. We are not able to heat food in school.
We are a nut-free school. For the safety of staff and pupils, please do not send any items containing nut (or tree nut) products.
All pupils must bring a water bottle to school. Bottles can be refilled throughout the day.

Absences

At SES we believe that when a child is regularly absent it has an adverse effect on their ability to make progress and achieve their full potential. As a result, we monitor pupil attendance closely and report it to parents on a termly basis.
Should your child be ill and unable to attend school, please let us know by sending an email to your child’s class teacher or to the Primary Reception.
Any vomiting, diarrhoea or a fever must be followed by a 24 hours absence before returning to school. An absence of two consecutive days requires a doctor’s certificate to be produced.
We do not encourage an extended leave of absence during term time; however we understand that exceptional circumstances may arise. If leave is required, please email the Head of Primary directly with your request: primary@sharjahenglishschool.org
Please note: Medicines can only be administered by prior arrangement with the school Nurse.

Siblings Club Fees for Primary Students

To help families managing different pickup schedules, our Sibling Club provides safe after-school care until your older child is dismissed.

The club timings are
