SBO Language & Conversation Circles aim to create a welcoming space where individuals from all backgrounds can come together to practice English, French, Creole, and Spanish in a spirit of mutual respect, learning, and cultural exchange. Our mission is to empower participants whether beginners or fluent speakers to build confidence, foster friendships, and deepen understanding across languages and cultures.
We believe that language is more than vocabulary, it’s a bridge to connection, opportunity, and shared humanity. Through guided conversations, interactive activities, and community storytelling, we hope to cultivate a sense of belonging and global citizenship.
The values that bring us together are:
• Inclusivity: Everyone is welcome, regardless of age, background, or language level.
• Respect: We honor each person’s voice, story, and journey.
• Curiosity: We celebrate the joy of learning and exploring new cultures.
• Community: We grow stronger through shared experiences and collective support.
Whether you're preparing for school, work, travel, or simply seeking connection, SBO invites you to join us in speaking, listening, and learning together.
Since launching the SBO Language & Conversation Circles, we’ve proudly created spaces where language becomes a bridge not a barrier. Here are a few highlights that reflect our mission in action:
• Welcomed over 75 participants across English, French, Creole, and Spanish sessions, including students, professionals from diverse backgrounds.
• Hosted weekly conversation circles in person and virtually, offering guided practice, cultural storytelling, and real-life roleplay in all three languages.
• Trained multilingual facilitators to lead inclusive sessions with warmth, patience, and cultural sensitivity many of whom are SBO alumni or community volunteers.
• Created trilingual learning materials tailored for Haitian learners, including visual aids, conversation prompts, and beginner-friendly vocabulary sheets.
• Celebrated cultural exchange events, such as “Language & Heritage Day,” where participants shared songs, proverbs, and traditions from their home countries.
• Supported job readiness and school success, helping participants prepare for interviews, write resumes, and navigate academic environments in their second or third language.
We’re proud of the friendships formed, the confidence gained, and the joy sparked through every shared word. This initiative continues to grow as a living expression of SBO’s mission: to uplift others through education, empathy, and opportunity.
