ISTEM students work hard and learn new skills in a fun project based environment!
ISTEM students gain mastery of the following NGSS Science and Engineering best practices:
Asking questions and defining problems
Developing and using models
Planning and carrying out investigations
Analyzing and interpreting data
Using mathematics and computational thinking
Constructing explanations and designing solutions
Engaging an argument from evidence
Obtaining, evaluating and communicating information
Using an interdisciplinary approach to learning, Wilson High School has created a program called ISTEM which stands for Integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Currently, two threads exist which consist of the following (all courses are Honors level).
ISTEM Integrated Science, ISTEM Creators of Curiosity, and ISTEM Algebra 1
ISTEM Physics, ISTEM Makers and Innovators, and ISTEM Algebra 2
The two threads are designed to help students explore and acquire the basic research and problem solving skills to aid their later experiences in the STEM Academy or a potential career in a STEM related field. The mission of ISTEM is also to help students develop strong interpersonal, communication, research, and technical skills necessary to compete in an ever changing global society. ISTEM focuses on the higher order thinking, engaged learning, authentic connections, and the use of technology (H.E.A.T. Model). Every student has been given the opportunity to challenge themselves in new ways through the integration of subjects, 21st century learning, and a project based environment. Students will be expected to utilize critical thinking skills and methods of scientific inquiry to further their knowledge of science and engineering as a process.
In a digitally-charged learning environment, the key is to turn up the H.E.A.T. on student learning. H.E.A.T. is an acronym that is synonymous with digital-age learning (i.e., 21st Century Skills) and represents Student Output in terms of student:
Higher order thinking,
Engaged learning,
Authentic connections, and
Technology use.
