This course is offered to 10th-12th graders and works with improving students’ awareness of their world, observation and painting skills, as well as visual and expressive problem-solving. We begin working with line, add painted values and explore with color in order to learn how to communicate through art. The class will introduce students to a variety of paint media and techniques such as watercolor, watercolor pencils, tempera paint, acrylic paint and even oil paint. Students will develop a strong understanding of paint vocabulary, including terms like wash, glaze, underpainting, saturation, opacity, blending, and impasto. They will also learn proper paintbrush care, such as cleaning, storing, and maintaining brushes to ensure their longevity and effectiveness. Additionally, students will explore how art connects to real-world situations and potential careers. Students will also explore how art connects to real-world situations and potential careers. Throughout their units of study, students will learn to observe, discuss, and critique artwork using appropriate vocabulary (focused on the Elements and Principals of Design) and thoughtful analysis. Regular peer collaboration will help students build confidence in expressing their ideas and encourage constructive feedback and reflection. These experiences not only enhance artistic skills but also develop communication, critical thinking which are essential tools for young adults navigating our ever-changing world.

Grading
60% = project (summative)
(The due date for all summative projects is within one week after the class has moved on to the next project. If students are absent, they are
welcome to work after school or take work home to make up the studio work. )
40% = journals, in-class practice work, any written critiques

Sketchbooks:
A bi-weekly drawing assignment is required in this course. Students may purchase a journal/sketchbook (larger than 5x7) or they can use the one that we make in class. All assignments will be posted in Google Classroom.
