Climbing to Good Health

HIGHMARK HEALTHY HIGH 5 GRANT

SHILOH HILLS IS THE RECIPIENT OF A GRANT FROM HIGHMARK

Shiloh Hills Elementary School is proud to be the recipient of a Highmark Health High 5 School grant that promotes fitness and health.  We have a 40' x 8' climbing wall in our gymnasium.  The climbing wall is a unit of study for all students in 1st grade through 5th grade.  The climbing wall is used for an endless variety of fitness concepts, fitness components, self esteem, responsibility,  word recognition, and even mathematical skills.  Elementary physical fitness is all about exposure to new and exciting concepts and the experience of participating in them.  The climbing wall provides both aspects to our Shiloh Hills physical education program.  Students can increase upper body and lower body strength, build coordination, develop responsibility through proper use of the wall, increase self esteem through adventurous and challenging activities, and even incorporate classroom math and reading by placing flash cards on the hand holds and have students answer problems as they climb the wall.  The wall not only benefits the children from a physical aspect but also academically as well.
