Lesson Summary/Overview
In this lesson of the “Getting Charged Up In 2nd Grade” unit, the students are taking their foundational knowledge of electricity to develop an understanding of how electrical circuits work as a complete loop for the current to pass through. They begin the lesson by identifying circuits around them and ways electricity powers items/devices in the classroom (Engage). After a brief discussion and identification of the circuits around them, the students will get supplies to build their own electrical circuits to power a motor and buzzer (Explore). Students then take time to reflect on the investigation and respond to questions to explain their work and show their evidence of a series circuit (Explain). Next, students are given an additional a button (switch) and additional wires. Students must build on the previous circuit by using a switch to control the flow of electricity (Elaborate). At the end of the lesson the students take time to create a video (with their partners or individually) that explains and demonstrates how an electrical circuit must be a completed loop to allow the flow of an electrical current. Detailed below you will find a more detailed flow of the 5Es and how they are used in the lesson.
The students in the class are already using Google Classroom. As a web 2.0 tool, the students can submit their work in assignments, contribute feedback to other students, and answer questions posted in the classroom. The teacher also has the capability to share resources and links with the students.
Screencastify is a tool that the students will use to capture a video demonstration and their explanation of how the circuit works. This can then be shared in Google Classroom.
