Why Elementary School Counselors?
"The elementary school years set the foundation for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for children to become healthy, competent and confident learners. Elementary school counselors have an impact on these years by implementing a school counseling program and collaborating with school staff, parents and the community to create a safe and respectful learning environment. By providing education, prevention, early identification and intervention, elementary school counselors help their students achieve academic success, develop an understanding of career opportunities and develop social/emotional skills in response to issues they face" (Schoolcounselor.org, American School Counselor Association).
At Cornwall Terrace, classroom teachers and school counselors work in collaboration in providing and delivering relevant social and emotional learning strategies through monthly classroom lessons. The topics of these lessons are designed to meet our students needs both academically and socially. Below are just some of the topics that we will discuss during classroom lessons:
Friendship
Listening Skills
Kindness
Conflict Resolution
Empathy
Honesty
Responsibility
Respect
Careers
...and more!
Counseling:
Counseling can also take place individually or in small groups. These sessions are designed to assist children in developing appropriate coping strategies or to teach a new skill. Counseling referrals can be made by any school staff, parents, and through self-referrals by each student. Small groups are created for students who may be dealing with similar areas of a need. Small groups typically consist of 3-8 students and provide a safe, confidential place for children to share their experiences and to learn from one another.
