In 1975, Edmonton was named the “Rape Capital of Canada” by a national report. This worried many Edmontonians, and opened our eyes to the lack of services provided for survivors of this abuse. As a result, in 1976, the Rape Crisis Centre of Edmonton was opened. It offered a crisis-line provided by a part-time coordinator and many dedicated volunteers. Since then, it has grown to be an essential resource in our community.
In 1983, the Criminal Code of Canada eliminated the word “rape”, and replaced it with “sexual assault.” The organization then changed their name to the Sexual Assault Center of Edmonton to reflect the change in legislation.
STATISTICS
Only 10% of sexual assault is reported, and 1 out of 3 girls, and 1 out of 6 boys, will be raped in their lifetime, typically before the age of 18. “[T]he rate of sexual assault for Canadians aged 15 to 24 was almost 18 times greater than the rate recorded for Canadians aged 55 years and older.”
