The Sunshine State Young Reader’s Award is a state-wide reading motivation program for students in grades three through eight. It is a collaborative effort between the Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME) and the Florida Department of Education. The program was designed with the sole purpose of encouraging students to read for pleasure over a wide variety of reading levels, genres, and topics. The books are selected every year for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections and/or multicultural representation in order to entice kids to just read for fun.

The Sunshine State Young Reader’s Award Junior is a state-wide reading motivation program for students in Kindergarten, First and Second grade. It is a collaborative effort between the Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME) and the Florida Department of Education. This list consists of a list of 15 titles, 10 of which are picture books. We read the picture books during Media Activity basing our activities and centers on those books. However, the five beginning chapter books may be read independently by students if they wish to read all 15 titles.
Reading Sparks is a reading motivation program for our third grade students (and hopefully second grade soon). The goal is to “kindle” their reading interest in beginning chapter books. They may choose books from a select group of book series which represent a wide variety of genres and reading levels. Students are invited to read three books from one series and then either pass a Reading Counts test or complete a reader response page for each book. Students will then earn a “Spark” (a button specifically designed for that series). They can earn up to 5 buttons for each series. As their button collections grow, students will be able to proudly share their reading progress.
