We are so excited to get to know you in orchestra this year! Orchestra is a great chance to challenge yourself by learning a new skill while having fun making music with friends! No matter if you are a complete beginner or have been playing your instrument for years, there is a place for you in orchestra! We offer differentiated instruction, which means that every student has a chance to be challenged at their level and succeed.
The first months of orchestra instruction focus on posture, playing position, and bow hold. Students develop ease of playing with the bow and learn D and A string notes by rote. We will be learning a number of songs to demonstrate these skills at our first concert in December. Students will be given a chance to pass off on their concert songs through Woodbury Orchestra Level Up system.
After our December concert we will begin our IB unit Reading Between the Lines in which students will learn how to read Western Music Notation, or notes on the musical staff. Our May concert will demonstrate more advanced musical skills such as following the cues of the conductor, different bow articulations, G string notes, dynamics, and part independence.
