Welcome to SGS Medical School!

By Phelana

SGS Medical School has just started! We will be spending the month of January learning briefly about the different body systems (respiratory, circulatory, muscular, skeletal, digestive, endocrine, excretory, integumentary, immune, nervous, and reproductive) in a survey course.

In February, students will be assigned one of the body systems to research in depth. They will prepare a 6 minute presentation to 2nd and 3rd grade students from a nearby elementary school, including making a poster board and creating an interactive activity. The presentations will take place on Tuesday, March 5 during the school day.

In March, students will choose a specialty (such as a disease or disorder) related to the body system they studied in February. Students will conduct research using the internet and email correspondence with a scientist or doctor who specializes in that field. As a class, we will be building bodies out of clay to represent each of the systems and show how the different organs are arranged in a skeleton.

Medical School will culminate in the Board Exams, which will take place on the evening of Thursday, March 28. This event is part of the More Than the Sum of Our Parts culmination which includes poetry performances and an art gallery. Please save the date; the event will run from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

If you or anyone you know is a professional in the biomedical field (physician, researcher, professor) and would be interested in being an email expert and/or a board examiner, please contact Phelana (ppang@seattlegirlsschool.org). Thank you!
