Overview of the modern world and Australia
Students examine the interwar years between WWI and WWII, the Treaty of Versailles, The Roaring 20’s and The Great Depression. Students also examine post war efforts to achieve lasting peace and security in the world, the major movements for rights and freedoms in the world, the Cold War and post-Cold War conflicts and developments in technology, public health, longevity and standard of living during the 20th century, and concerns for the environment and sustainability.
World War II
Students investigate wartime experiences through study of World War II in depth. This includes a study of the causes, events, outcome and broader impact of the conflict.
Rights and freedoms
Students investigate struggles for human rights in depth by examining the Civil Rights Movement in the US, the struggle of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples for rights and freedoms and the impact of the US Civil Rights movement on this struggle.
Popular Culture
Students consider the nature of popular culture in Australia at the end of WWII, including music, film and sport.
There is a significant emphasis on developing inquiry skills and historical source analysis skills.
Assessment
Assessment consists of source analysis, essays, multimodal presentations and an individual Historical inquiry.
