Nordatlantens åbning

Figurtekst. Opening of the North Atlantic through different epochs of the Cenozoic era. Colours indicate the age of the oceanic lithosphere whilst the Norwegian-Greenland Sea was opening. Note the narrow seaway in the North Atlantic prior to the Oligocene preventing connection with the Arctic Ocean. As the Fram Strait opened from the Oligocene onwards a deepwater connection was established as circulation patterns more akin to today began to develop.
