Denman along with all schools in California use the Common Core State Standards. The standards ask students to spend more time on fewer concepts. Through intensive practice, they learn to carry out mathematical procedures quickly and accurately. Students will focus on understanding concepts more deeply and making connections among topics instead of rushing to get an answer. They will have to explain how they arrived at their conclusion, showing they understand not just the basic calculations but the greater mathematical idea as well. The Common Core standards provide us with a powerful opportunity to develop students’ critical thinking skills and push them to become lifelong learners.
Hands-on activities and manipulatives as well as group and individual activities are part of the regular curriculum.
