Neighborhood:
Portola
School Code:
710
MLK embraces the whole child, where students, families, and staff receive the support they need to engage students in rigorous and relevant learning. We commit to creating a caring and collaborative community, with a focus on nurturing a sense of belonging and promoting agency and youth voice.
When a student is promoted from the 8th grade at MLK, there will be no statistical predictability in a student’s academic achievement or social/emotional indicators based on race/ethnicity, historical ELD status, socioeconomic status, or Special Education status. Every student comes to MLK with the same potential to achieve at the highest level, and every student will get what they need at MLK to achieve that potential.
MLK was formerly called “Portola Junior High” until 1977. The site was redeveloped as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in 1986.
FUN FACT: This neighborhood was named after our school.
How do you say Portola???
- Many San Francisco residents pronounce it “Por-TOE-la”
- Immigrants who came from Ireland, Italy, and Europe in the 1920’s call it “POR-tola”
- The first Spanish explorer to see San Francisco, when only the Ramaytush Ohlone people lived here, was Gaspar de Portola. He was Catalan, so the accent was pronounced “Por-to-LA”
Welcome to MLK Middle School, we have a beautiful campus with our cobra athletics yards, sports, electives, library, classrooms, auditoriums, and more! Here are some of background information about our school.
The presidential gallery of the school’s picture will be taken and posted here soon by Justin Chen. The school may look different every year, so pictures may not be accurate.
1. Yard, Grounds, Outside
- We have a courtyard which is the front of our campus, planted with beautiful trees, areas for students to have lunch, and front and main entrances for students to enter our school.
- We also have our newly renovated yards with upgrades. When you walk to our yards at MLK. On the lower yard, there is a volleyball court, a newly placed Soccer Field, foursquare courts, and basketball courts. When you walk up to our upper yard, you would see that there is a newly placed soccer field, where track and football are, and you would also see basketball courts. The yards are also where our PE Classes are.
- Including our Gym and Fitness lab. In our gym, we have our beautiful basketball court and stadium. Which is where sometimes we have our assemblies. Then we have our fitness lab where we have electric bikes, spin bikes, and many more.
2. Main Building (First Floor)
- Main Office: As you enter our school in our main building on the first floor, we have the main office, so if you have any issues or need to pick up students, fix attendance, or more, you can go to the main office. The main office, including student support, which will be stated after this, is the administrative offices.
- Nurse's Office: Next is the Nurse's Office. If you get hurt or feel unwell, you can go to the nurse's office and the Nurse will help you and make sure you are feeling well and better to go back to class.
- Student Support: Student support is the office of counselors, social workers, and many more. That is where when you have issues and problems you could go talk to them and also if you have class issues, problems with schedules, you can go there.
- Beacon (Afterschool Program): The Beacon office is next to student support, where most of the afterschool program staff are, and that is one of their offices.
- Classrooms: The first floor has many classrooms also including elective classes and core classes. So there are 7th-grade and 8th-grade core classes on the first floor.
3. Main Building (Second Floor)
On our second floor, when you walk up our staircase, there are 3 staircases to go up to our second floor.
- Classrooms: So the second floor also has classrooms, but it has elective classes and core classes, and so there are 6, 7, and 8th grade classes on the second floor.
- Library: We also have our school library here on the second floor, and when you walk up our main staircase right after the office, you will see our library, which is also renovated with new stuff and a new structure of our library.
4. Cafeteria
So our school has a large cafeteria on the left when you walk through the main entrance of the school, and our cafeteria serves food to our students. Our cafeteria also has an auditorium, and also sometimes where assemblies happen. Menus for school lunches are on the MLK SFUSD website.
5. Arts Department & Outside Art Department Wing, Known as the Arts Department
For the arts department on the outdoor side classrooms…
- We have our Band class, where students here at MLK who take band/music as an elective learn their instruments and play them there. MLK band classes also perform, and they also learn music!
- Next, we have our 6th grade Arts, so the 6th grade Arts is in the art studio, which is a classroom for 6th grade students to learn how to draw and create, and many more. It is taken as an elective.
*7th & 8th grade arts are taken inside on the second-floor classroom.
- Teen Center: Next to the 6th-grade arts classroom, we have a teen center which opens for grade levels at certain different days we have games, video games, and many more. It is like an entertainment center that opens during lunchtime at certain days based on grade level.
This is just some details about our school. There is a lot to explore around our school. If you are interested in taking a look around our school, or your student would like to enroll and explore our school. You can schedule a school tour on our MLK SFUSD website.
Thank You!
