The theme of the semester was Decoding Success: Examining the American Dream, which students used to interpret how they see themselves and how they want others to see them. As a result of MADE educator Miriam Iglesias’s participation in SFMOMA’s Teacher Advisory Group students spent a semester exploring murals from Bay Area Walls, thinking about how artwork can be used to convey stories of authorship, identity, power, and community. The expectations of the project were broad, giving students the opportunity to interpret the assignments how they saw fit.
The resulting work is a series of quilted self-portraits, a video game exploring the impediments to and fictions of the American Dream, and a quilted reinterpretation of the American Flag.
