As an ELL, I wanted to support those students in my school that struggled with learning how to read in English. So, I did my community project by starting a tutoring program at my school. The tutoring program was for first grade ELLs. I began tutoring on February 4th. I tutored three ELLs from a different first grade class. I did my endorsement in bilingual education. So, I used the strategies that I learned on my Teaching English as a Second language course to tutor the students. My principal was able to give me resources to help teach ELLs to read. I did 10 tutoring sessions before we transitioned to remote learning. In those 10 sessions, I saw a lot of growth in the three students I tutored. At the end of the fifth tutoring session, they started reading cvc decodable books. They were excited to finally start reading. It was a wonderful experience. I look forward to supporting more ELLs in the future.
