With an individual planned gift, you can take care of yourself and take care of SF Night Ministry. We can help you explore how a planned gift will achieve your financial and philanthropic goals.
Planned giving is providing for a future gift to charities. We welcome gifts made through different planned giving arrangements.
These arrangements can:
Provide for you or your loved ones
Entitle you to charitable income and/or gift or estate tax deductions
Enable you to leave a legacy for SF Night Ministry
A bequest is a gift from your estate—a transfer of cash, securities, or other property—made through your estate plans. A bequest costs nothing now and enables you to contribute to the Night Ministry’s care for the heart and soul of San Francisco far into the future.
You can make a bequest to Night Ministry by including language in your will or living trust leaving a portion of your estate to the Night Ministry or by designating Night Ministry as a beneficiary of your retirement account or life insurance policy. Remembering Night Ministry with a bequest from your estate will help sustain and strengthen our work for years to come. Some of the advantages of creating a bequest include:
A bequest costs nothing now, yet gives you the satisfaction of knowing you have provided for Night Ministry in the future
You retain control of and use of your assets during your lifetime
You may modify your bequest if your circumstances change
Gifts to Night Ministry from your estate are exempt from federal estate taxes
A bequest to Night Ministry can be made for a specific amount, for a percentage of your estate, or for all or a portion of what is left after you have made bequests to your family. To make a gift to Night Ministry from your estate, you must sign a new will or living trust instrument, add a codicil to your present will, or make an amendment to your present trust instrument.
Unrestricted bequests are preferred so that Night Ministry can discern where funding is needed most. All gifts are welcome, however, so please feel free to gift resources to your favorite program or need.
Sample Unrestricted Bequest
I hereby devise, bequest, and give ___________________* to THE NIGHT MINISTRY, INC. (DBA SAN FRANCISCO NIGHT MINISTRY), a non-profit organization dedicated to spiritual care, to support the objects and purposes of the organization.
* Fill in the blank with the dollar amount, percentage of estate, or specific property you intend to give to the Night Ministry.
Expect the Unexpected
Inclusion of the following language is optional, but suggested, in order to ensure that a bequest designated for a specific use will always remain productive if circumstances change unexpectedly:
If, in the judgment of the Board, changed circumstances should at some future time render the designated use of this gift no longer appropriate, then the Board shall use the gift to further the objects and purposes of the Night Ministry, giving consideration to my special interest as evidenced by the purposes described above.
Sample Restricted Bequest
I hereby devise, bequest, and give ___________* to THE NIGHT MINISTRY, INC. (DBA SAN FRANCISCO NIGHT MINISTRY), a non-profit organization dedicated to spiritual care, to…
…provide___________ [named needed resources]
-- OR --
…support the [nightly walks | telephone Care Line | street programs | Open Cathedral | Open Shabbat | Buddhist programing | LGBTQ+ programming | Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) programming].
-- OR --
…provide financial aid for [interns | CPE students].
* Fill in the blank with the dollar amount, percentage of estate, or specific property you intend to give to the Night Ministry.
Alternatively, you can designate Night Ministry as a beneficiary of a retirement plan or life insurance policy. To do so, contact the retirement plan administrator or life insurance company and complete the appropriate beneficiary designation form. You can designate a specific purpose for such a gift with a separate letter prepared with assistance from the Night Ministry.
You may also make an IRA qualified charitable distribution (QCD) during your lifetime. In 2023, for example, you could direct your plan administrator to distribute an amount up to $100,000 to a public charity. The distribution counts against your required minimum (RMD) but is not included in your income for tax purposes. Also, the definition of QCDs has been expanded to include a one-time distribution up to $50,000 to fund a charitable gift annuity or remainder trust.
A life income gift allows you to give assets to Night Ministry while providing yourself or others with income for a period of time before Night Ministry is permitted to use your gift. You may make a life income gift by transferring securities, cash, or other property to Night Ministry or a trustee. The trustee then manages the investment of the assets and pays an income to you, your designated beneficiaries, or both. Income payments continue for the beneficiaries’ lives or, in some cases, for a term of up to 20 years.
There are many forms a Life Income Gift can take. Please contact us for details and support!
